Description

"Woah look over there! What's that place like, wanna go?"

I saw this character from Caia-Mei and they're adorable!!^^ And since there was a request to draw em, I'm gonna chance draw em out on adventure with Djala!
I haven't drawn Djala in a long time, so double yay in my books!^^ Yes, nanowrimo did manage to swallow me up- but prepping xmas gifts are also partially to blame! But its all good in the end as long as I come back, right?

In case you're curious, Djala is an azabu:

Some more silly art of Djala!

This -at the moment unnamed- character, belongs to Caia-Mei
Djala belongs to Keali Bjørk.
Please do not repost, or use without permission, thank you.

Hey, thanks for having a look at my art!^^
I encourage chatter in my comment section, so if you wanna ask the character something, or leave any feedback, go for it!
I can't promise I'll change/fix the piece, but I'll keep feedback in mind for the next piece I draw!

You know, this artwork really reminded me of what one would see in those exciting anime openings xD both characters certainly look like they belong in the same universe, haha! Good on you for executing the bright atmosphere of this art piece so well ^u^

Okay, so in continuation for the other species comments:
This one piqued my interest in particular, because they look humanoid and yet are accustomed to live underground. Their story kind of reminded me of the human-like fish people who lived in the underground in one of my favorite cartoons, Adventure time! (in the episode called 'Susan Strong, part 1' if you're curious as to what they look like!) ;D
Also, what is the creature this Harun is holding over here? It looks so cute! <3
Overall, telling by the way you write your descriptions on these species, you've been really working on all this world-building for quite a while, haven't you? It looks all so complex! :0

Baw, thank you, that's very kind of you to say!^^ I did hope the lower and top black bars would give off a sort of TV feel. :3
And yush! This would be one of those crossover events, since they're from different worlds, and I'm pretending this is Caia-Mei 's character showing Djala their world. Come to think of it, I don't know anything about this oc's world. Hope I am forgiven if one day they do elaborate more on it, and this doesn't fit. ^^

As for the mapreture and harun!
I think I remember Susan. She had gills on her throat, yes? ^^ And they all either had, or wore some sort of animal feature (Susan having a "cat ear hat?").
The mapreture were supposed to be similar to the likan , but I also wanted a species that came from this old concept I had when I was younger(which were the shades, which likan fear but ironically they had the most efficient way of defeating them if they had known). So when the time came, I thought "well either the mapreture monster will continue to plague the world(and why would gods willingly bring that to a new world??), or I can make them their own people again."

I also joked with a friend that the father of the main character of my comic, is writing a young adult romance novel series, where the mapreture monster is romanticized, sort of like Twilight and vampires. XD sta.sh/01hxisbnfqi6

That is a Luegeria native animal called Yiane. The spines on its back are filled with proteins and other nutrients and can be harvested. ^^

Yes, I developed this world some years ago, and wrote a loooong summary for nanowrimo, in place of an actual novel, of the event which lead to the current day life of Fuiah, Terlu, and Kori. These three are the focus ocs I have for this world as of now. ^^ It really helps me flesh out the world, by having one or more ocs travel around and explore their own world. Or just live through their normal mundane lives. ^^ Daydreaming is awesome imo.

Sorry, as usual, I am probably over-sharing, but thank you so much for your question, and your interest!^^

You're welcome. And yeah, those bars definitely felt like watching an actual show, haha!
Also! Imo I think you have only displayed what needed to only be seen by the viewer on the piece, so there was no need for that context or extra explaining on the difference of their worlds. You know, because they're just 'there' for the sake of the crossover! xD Overall I know how you would feel about this kind of crossover art. You had fun making it, and that's all that matters. (:

Mhm! You're kinda close though. It was revealed in the later episodes that Susan was actually human, and she did not have gills as the other animal-hat wearing fish people did. Apparently she just hid her identity with the hat so that she can protect them.

BAHAHAHA xDD Yeah lol btw I clicked on the link, he even has the cliche' hair, features and everything!! Even the silly pick up lines n jokes are on point, lol!
Ah, hopefully you wouldn't mind about me digging into your folders for those main OCs later on. It is true that characters exploring their own world takes out the best in both the character and environments x)

No problem! I don't mind. Like, the stash link joke you sent me was totally unexpected and hilarious! x'D Honestly I would feel the same too if someone expressed the slightest interest in my works, or explain it to me in their own special way. Getting feedback from multiple n different people works wonders, tbh. It's like trying a fresh new pair of glasses from someone's unique perspective ^u^

I mostly mentioned the "worlds" as a subtle "yes they look nice together, but I wanna make sure you get that they're not from the same world," kind of deal. XD Darn, busted me! Hehe.

Ahaaa! I never saw that far! That's cool! Susan, you continue to be so cool. ; v ;

Yes, I think I drew this for a stream or something, I was explaining Thoden's parents, since her family plays a big role in her motives and drives in the comic.
Heh, I hope you find something helpful/fun in the folders!.^^ I don't always have time to draw and elaborate on my mains, but hey I do get more motivation when people ask or poke at me about em lol.

Yeah it feels kinda weird, since you dont post that much. Maybe I'll sneak through your gallery and check out some stuff there! I wanna give back!

Alrighty then, haha! x'D
Yes, she is (; Susan Strong reminded me of your Konac species. The giant ones! It's too bad Adventure time ended already. I did enjoy the vast world-building and story of that show.

Yep, I was able to check the folders. The 'Shareen Unleashed' folder interested me a bit, because it featured the OC that I drew for you way back at my forum post x) You wanna give some context or explain about it?

Actually, I'm okay with giving feedback even though others don't give back for me (: tbh I think it would mean much more if you actually found an artwork of mine that you really liked. Fave for fave is nice, but I want to make sure that you really enjoyed the artwork that it is deserving of a favorite from you it would a lot more to me that way. <3

All good things must come to an end, sadly! But maybe this means a new series will pop up instead, with new ideas (that maybe would not have fit with Finn & Jake).^^

(had to go back and find out which thread it was, etc, and saw the comment about 9/11, but its clear as day on the thread that it was posted on 9/12. So I hope you didn't let that get to you.)

So you're asking about Thoden Leh, if I am correct.^^
She is the main character of my webcomic Shareen Unleashed, with the cat girl Arideh as a secondary main character.
Thoden is from a huge family, with lots of prestige. Her family tries their best to contribute to the society they live in, to the point where they have a family hall with paintings or photos. They're of the family members who have had small or big achievements. It's lead to Thoden feeling like she also needs to make some grand achievement, or she won't make her family proud. Even if they just tell her they love her for who she is, she's got it in her head that she has to perform some grand feat. And that's what motivates her through the comic- her looking for some way of impressing people. And it really does work for my writing. ^^ Thoden has tried a lot of different fields of work, hoping to prosper, only to have some other family member reveal some sort of achievement with the same field. She's also got an episode from when she was younger, that her magic (her species are native magic-users) isn't "normal," so she hides it from fear it will land her in trouble.

Oh wait, you said "explain about it." Maybe you weren't asking about her specifically, but the comic, or? Sorry, still a bit scrambled after the holidays. XD  But I'm letting the part about Thoden stay anyway.
First, setting the scene, with some info that's important to know about the world this takes place on:

Shareen Unleashed takes place on the world Shareen. Crystals and aether is what the people on that world use for energy. It's normally clean, but sometimes for whatever reason, aether can become corrupted, which renders it not only useless, but also various degrees of toxic.
The unleashed part if the title comes from that the comic will focus on people who work with eliminating threats. These threats are animals that have become corrupted after repeated exposure to . A lot centers around protecting people from these threats, and work that goes towards curing the animals, or someway of preventing them from coming in contact with the corrupted aether.

When Thoden tries finding someplace where she can shine, she decides to join the Zain Elemental Force(Z.E.F.), which is the task force that deals with corrupted animal attacks. No one in her family works in the force, so she gravitates towards it. And from there, she has to come to terms with things, learn new things about herself, about others, gain new friends, make mistakes, all those fun things.
I'm hesitant to say more, since I don't want to spoil the story.^^

However, if you have questions about any of the characters, feel free to ask, or comment on those pics with questions. I try and write in the descriptions of the drawings, so if you're really curious then maybe an answer is there. If not, then you know where to find me!^^

-

This is a good mindset, though I would like to see through your gallery, since you don't have so much time to post as much anymore. ^^ So I hope you won't mind that I'm going about this my own way. Besides, it's nice to give feedback, and I don't want to get rusty. Yes, I get rusty. If I fave, then I want to have energy to also comment. :D

Exactly. and ik, I'm just happy that they're starting the Adventure time series anew and fresh again with new series that continues the story and shows the future of Ooo. Have you seen the new protags yet (Shermy and Beth)? They look so cute! xD

Ahh, no worries about the troll guy, I got it taken care of (; > comments.deviantart.com/18/243… . And yes I did publish this on 9/11, I just happened to be bored about all the memorial news about it on TV that I ended up making that thread. And then there was the realization that someone might point this out haha. Tbh I kinda expected to be trolled about it sooner but it didn't happen until I was near closing the thread. But I thank you for your concern, though! <3 Honestly trolls and alts shouldn't be taken seriously, and in the end it's all in good fun

And woah! Thank you so much for posting the main protagonist's backstory too! :0 I completely forgot about that, it's what makes a story what it is, after all (: Now that you explained it so well to me, I have one last question lol. Do you have a link to the webcomic? Or is it one of those things where I have to pay to read it? I rlly wanna take a look at it haha!

(Yes, I rlly appreciate the feedback you've given me, and that you didn't fave bomb my gallery (; it really means a lot that you chose the ones that you enjoyed).

KeyOllie In reply to Buskira [2019-01-03 11:11:54 +0000 UTC]

Frankly I don't see what 9/11 has to do with your thread anyway.
Though, I suppose I'm a timetraveller then.

This is a screencap I just took. It clearly says 12th, but now that I think more about it, does it really matter??
The victims of that tragic event wouldn't want the world to go completely silent for an entire day. I don't see how your thread is somehow disrespecting that day.
Though yes, it is just a troll, and it is easy to simply wave them off, since you were closing it anyway. ^^ And i'm glad it wasn't because of them that you closed your thread. That was mostly why I reacted to the troll. ^^ But it's all good.

In regards to Adventure Time, I have seen the new protags, and they look adorable and adventurous!^^

The comic will begin posting, free of charge, once I finish 30 pages! :D Right here on dA! (unless a friend talks me into making a website for it)
I know it is important to have a buffer, as I often see people fall into hiatus very quickly from not being able to catch up at all. So I made some hard rules for myself, since I want to draw comic pages with colours, and post once a week. I would need a pretty big buffer, in case life happens, or something else happens and prevents you from drawing for a while. ^^

Oh, I don't fave-bomb anymore. I don't have the heart for it. It's a double-edged sword, seeing all those notifications, but then you check and its just faves. Which is nice, but getting a smol comment is still nicer. ^^ Sometimes I go visit people's profile when I get a nice comment, or thoughtful one, in regards to critique.^^ Which is why unless I feel I can comment, I'll try not to fave a lot of art.
I have a question for you though. Your art is really, really good!! But you have your fave folder on top on your profile, with your deviations below. Any special reason for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Buskira In reply to KeyOllie [2019-01-04 07:09:10 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, figures. I guess it has something to do with the time difference, tho? It was 9/11 it the US when I posted up that thread, I think it was currently 9/12 at where you're living. The screenshot is pretty solid evidence itself, now I know why the thread didn't get trolled sooner. It was because of the time difference for different deviants, so that's why :0 only deviants living in the US could only see that.
Haha, don't worry too much about me. Tbh if this happened 3 years ago, I would've taken this very seriously, and thanks to some experience over the internet it's good to know that these sort of troll accounts exist. I don't see any bad intentions w/ it, except he was there to entertain? xD And yeah, I was closing the thread anyways because I was tired of taking requests. Once again, ty for ur concern! I wouldn't think that ppl would swing by that forum post again, since it became stale imo.

Oi! That's great. I look forward to it, and it is very nice to hear that you're planning it, too. And yeah, I encourage you as well to just be sure to keep the posting consistent. (: (Btw congratulations w/ your contest! It was fun to see Djala drawn in a different artstyle. Do you mind if I draw her someday? She's cute, haha)

I know. I could see how fave-bombing can be like a double-edged sword too, since I personally heard from some other artists that they expect the watchers faving only to continually fave as long as they keep on running their accounts. It's kinda sad, actually. I guess that's the problem with faving or liking, you can just do that and then easily dismiss the deviation without much thought. It's a good thing that you check out the profile pages after they interact. It's natural that you want to help out with their works, too! xD

Ofc, I'll happily answer that for you. The reason why I have the favorites widget over my profile is because every time I get on my page, I always simply smile just seeing the artworks I've rlly enjoyed, and just to see the art of ppl who are really big fans of my work, and get stupendously happy when I comment on their work, even though they have only favorite bombed my art. It's some sort of motivation to keep on using this account, haha! I don't have any more reasons to stay here, but seeing all those ppl who create such amazing things and some others who support me back always manages to keep me going. I know it's kind of strange, since it's technically my profile, and that the majority would just put their works on the top, but that is the truth! (: I even get llamas from them every time they see their works on my page, haha! So it's a win-win. (;

Oh yeah, I forget that it would pop up like that due to timezones. ^^
Well you did a mega effort to draw as many as you could, I can see why you would like a change/break from it.

Yes, the point of the 30 page buffer is so that I'll always have something to post, even if something bad comes up. ^^ I'll be using the scheduling system they have here on dA most likely!
(Thank you! I'll probably do another, but then I'll only have Djala as the subject to draw, so it's more uniform and easier for me to judge. And you may absolutely draw her if you wanna! That would be super nice of you!^^ I have a folder for her, if you're ever wondering about reference for her. ^^)

Aww, that's a very kind thing to consider! ^^

Yes ;u; tbh now I can see why artists don't like giving away so many free requests. I wrongfully thought they were being spiteful or selfish before, but now I think I understand! :0 (Btw you have taken commissions before, right? I'm kinda new to the whole commission thing, but is it worth it? Like, just putting up commissions for money or points?)

Oh, good! (Btw a side note, if you're planning to upload the 30 pages in 2 weeks I might not be here because I'm gonna be at science camp for like 3 days :/ it's mandatory, plus I can't access DA from there.)
Yeah btw I drew her >:3c   I didn't finalize the sketch, or I might not be incorporating this very drawing in the final product, but I wanna see if I got her design right. So feel free to point out any mistakes. ^

And yes! It makes me happy too, so ofc I would wanna do that for them x)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KeyOllie In reply to Buskira [2019-01-10 10:24:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes, at a certain point, giving out requests becomes a bit of a chore. I used to love giving out free requests (just look in gallery, or giftart folder, or my journals), but most artists eventually come to the point where they have a story they want to tell, or they need to make money to make a living. So at that point, requests give way for commissions. Though requests is an excellent way of getting in practice. Because you get a lot of different characters to try and work with, and since it's free, they can't really "bully" you into polishing a piece for them! XD They got it for free, and most are happy with what they get!

Yes, I do commissions. And I have become a bit hardened so it's important that you tell me what exactly you want to get out of it. If you are old enough, or your parents know and will help you with the paypal part, you can accept cash for your art. If not, then points are a way to go, and you can spend those on the things on this website, such as membership, other commissions, etc. Please do keep in mind that if you are of a certain artistic level, it's important not to undercut your price, even if you're doing it as a hobby.

The reason I say this is because it hurts other people who do commissions at more standard prices. Some clients love pointing at an undercutting artist and telling other artists "but their art is $, why is yours $$$?? Lower YOUR prices," not thinking that the latter artist is doing commissions to pay bills, while the former artist just wants a bit more spending money.
Art is a luxury. It is a skill that takes time to learn. It's important to remember good pricing.

I really wish the dA point system was not the way it is, because the amount of numbers spook a lot of people.
The best way of telling how much the points are worth, is going into the "SHOP" tab and selecting "points," and from there, see how much they are worth. Then, look around yourself, google commissions, and see which style is yours, and try and get a feel for how much the average price is.

Another thing you can do, is charge by how long it takes you to draw something. A sketch should be cheaper than a fully lined, coloured, shaded, background drawing. Because one takes longer than the other. ^^ I try and not charge below the minimum wage of my country (then convert that rate to euros/dollars). It's my time that I'm using, I should be paid as if it was a normal job. And so should you. You can have a talk with your parents or someone older if you're still confused about payment and what is good.

Awww, she looks adorable, and so fluffy!^^ Thank you very much for drawing her!
As for things to point out. It is your style, so I hesitate a bit, but if I want to be harsh-- Her bangs(front part hair) is divided into four parts. The outer part covers partially over the two parts that come out next to her neck/throat. ^^ That would be the only thing I can think of, and it's mostly personal feel. I like your interpretation of her hair as well though.^^

And don't worry about the comic coming out before you return from camp. I wanna get four pages out per month, so it might not start coming out until February or even March!^^ I'll have a dedicated folder in my gallery for it though, with the newest pages on top for easy access.

Buskira In reply to KeyOllie [2019-01-16 08:00:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that is true. I remember when hosting that muro plz forum thread there was rarely anyone unhappy w/ the request and noticeably, the art gradually got better with every request finished..! :0 You did mention that people can sometimes 'bully' you with the way you draw their characters. I never experienced that w/ a request before, but does that happen w/ commissions? (since they're basically a little more stricter than free requests, plus they're paying actual money in exchange). The only thing I'm worried about when putting up commissions is that my patron might pressure me into some sort of deadline or time limit when I'm drawing their character, and usually I'm pretty lax when drawing so it takes time.

The reason why I asked is because I wanted to make a little money for myself out of it. My parents are also planning for me to get into the summer jobs again, so I thought it would be pretty cool to make some allowance for myself while doing my hobby which I enjoy x'D <3 I probably won't be strict on the prices though (I was thinking about charging between 2 to 4 dollars for my art, like a head-to-torso portrait) but I'm also worried that they might take advantage of the cheap price as well and then I might be overwhelmed with those yet again, like the requests T~T" so idk, I'm rather reluctant on it

But so far, hearing it from you (and all the advice! Wow, thank you!) it seems rather professional imo x'D and it's like you're dealing w/ an actual customer who literally expects much out of you, since it is paid!

also you're welcome! (: I tried again, btw so I hope I got her hair right this time xDD if not then I'll try the references again, lol!

(Oh goody! Now I won't miss out, haha!)

KeyOllie In reply to Buskira [2019-01-30 17:45:09 +0000 UTC]

When I say "bully," it's for people who are really set on how they envision their character, even if its in a way they can't draw yet. ^^ It was friends mostly, who felt comfortable with asking me to add some minor detail that to them was pretty vital. So I didn't mind.
On commissions, it is important to do it as the client asks, as long as it doesn't go as far as them saying "I want you to draw it in this style!" and the style is some semi realistic manga style that is far removed from your own. But I usually just politely decline those, and they are understanding then. I have been very lucky. I think I have only gotten two PMs here on dA, with people asking for commissions outside of my "seasons." But I cant remember someone asking for it for free, even though popular artists tend to get those a lot apparently. Normally, the clients have an idea of how the pose should be, and you just try and follow that.^^ It's actually harder for me when the client doesn't have any idea, and also doesn't tell you about the character, so you don't know what is appropriate to pose them as. ^^
You'll need to have some form of agreement with the client regarding a deadline. Some don't care if you take a month, while others would like something within a week or so. Normally, I don't charge full until they see the sketch. That way, I know I'm almost done, so they won't wait long for the result. ^^

It's great to have summer jobs!
And yes, it is important that people don't overwhelm you. Open slots. Tell people the slots will open again, once you're done with that batch. Then after you're done with your batch of for example 4 commissions, and feel you need a small break before the next, then take that break, or open up less commission slots next. ^^
That's how the "pros" do it. I don't. XD because I tend to take 1 week per commission, even if they're technically only paying me to work a few hours on their piece. ^^

Aww, she's still cute as a button! You don't have to worry too much about getting it right. ^^ Her front bangs loop under her other "bangs," but it can be tricky, so I ain't gonna force you to do this over again. I'm honestly just happy you're drawing Djala! ^^

Oh wow o: you must be very lucky not to run into any aggressive clients. Now I hope that doesn't happen to me aaa~

Okay, so basically what I learned from all your advice is that communication between the client and artist is very important, and I have to know my limits when it comes to the art style and what they want on their characters. I'll keep that in mind when I put up commissions

Here, in exchange for all of your good advice, LOL!
Honestly that's nice to hear, even though I keep on getting the hair wrong! :') I just went w/ the one that I drew you already because I liked it so much haha x'D I also made a major change w/ the eyes, in regards to coloring style lol. Hope you don't mind!

You were smart and had a "okay to draw my char"(or something to that effect) on your profile, and links to refs... That's the sort of stuff that gets your oc drawn sometimes :3c

But in all honesty, it's a great design, and very nice and simple, which is great! All too often I see really complicated ocs, and they're pretty hard to incorporate into giftart. ^^
