if you don't know the story of the leeds devil, or jersey devil, it supposedly haunts the pine barrens in new jersey, occasionally taking out livestock/campers.
supposedly some lady known only as 'mother leeds', had twelve children, and apon finding that she was pregnant yet again, cried out, 'i dont' want any more children, let this one be a devil'. so it was born as the hidious creature you see above. in one version it beats the shit out of everyone in the room and flew out the chimney. in another version, it stays, but is driven out by it's mother, and the rest of the family.
keep in mind this story cam from a time when the puritanical folk beliefs of colonial america were the mainstay. it was believed that if a woman were to become scared, or blasphemous, it would physically effect the child in utero. also note the use of the number thirteen, considered bad luck in those days. it's really quite fascinating
