First off, there's nothing wrong with painting from references. My uncle's a professional artist, and he regularly goes places to paint what he sees. There's a reason for the massive resources section on Deviantart, and a reason why plein air sketching is still such a practiced art form.
Also, man, you definitely beat the pants off everyone in the challenge. This is lovely. I like the way there's so much texture and detail at the front, and it becomes less distinct back on the far fields and the hills.

Thanks, Ryua. This is probably one of my best, texture-wise. I really used a variety of Painter's brushes in multiple ways, rather than relying heavily on one brush.
As for using photo refs, it only becomes challenging for me when I want to paint from my imagination. The architecture I'm thinking of comes from a story I'm writing, set in a fantasy world with diverse peoples and cultures, and I want to design a variety of buildings for a variety of locations. The thing is, I'm no architect, and I barely know how buildings even work. >_> What I'm aiming for is knowing how to draw a decent building, so I can use references as a guide and not a crutch. I won't have perfect refs for every angle of every building that I want to draw, so I feel I should learn how to draw the basics and then fill in the blanks with references.
If any of that makes sense. xD

That does make a lot of sense. Seems like a massive undertaking, but a really cool one.

It will be a challenge, but a fun one, because it's for a project that means a lot for me. I'm glad Jessica inspired us to try this.

This is amazing! I have to say, looking at this piece it certainly doesn't seem like you're bad at drawing buildings. ^_^ All the lines and the perspective work, the textures and materials look good - this building seems awesome! Lovely background as well; it's very serene. Excellent work!

Thank you. It's just when I don't have a reference, I'm hopelessly lost. I have some more photos I'll draw from and I may even go out and photograph some apartments or something so I can keep practicing.
My favorite part about the texture is that I painted it in. No photo overlays.
Thanks--it really is very serene in person. I'm glad some of that translated to the painting.

This is gorgeous, I thought it WAS a photo in the thumbnail dude. I gotta do more of these studies myself somehow.

That really is a success. It's actually really impressive, the colors you used for the grass, the depth effect ; did you use a reference or something ?
