Description What I've been working on over the past few nights.
Pretty pleased with this one, actually. I think all this practice may be paying off. xD

First full size doll with a proper wire frame.

I know the antlers are crookedy. xD I am not fixing them until right before baking, they just get messed up again.

It is painters tape. c:
It smooths the tinfoil under the clay.

What's your method for sculpting such perfect fur? That's always an area I've had trouble with.

I use the clay tool I have, which comes to a pointed tip. And I just very carefully draw it in the direction I want the fur. Shorter fur gets short strokes, longer fur gets long strokes. And I try to wiggle it a little, so it's a little wavy like real fur. c:

Awesome! Thanks, I think I pick at it too much or put too much pressure on. Your work is amazing! I'm just getting into larger modeling (I usually do miniatures or smaller sculptures so I don't really use frames so I'm teaching myself how to do big stuff) and I can use all the advice you have to spare!

Yeah, you have to be veeerrry gentle. Especially with super sculpey it's very soft.
I can give you any advice you want! c:
I just sort of threw myself into it a few months ago. I know it can be a little difficult. xD so I am happy to help.

Ok, now tha tI can think clearly. This is gorgeous! I think the antlers are perfect. Slight asymmetry makes an animal more realistic, and I can't even tell about the crookedness you mentioned.

I might have changed my mind about the trade, I might switch to asking you for a deer like critter instead of a dragon! This is lovely. Can't wait to see him done!

Thanks. <3
Though I am definitely putting the antlers on LAST next time. xD
They get bumped around and threaten to get knocked off as I turn him to do the fur detail. oi!
I spent a whole night just on the antlers. xD

I bet you did! They look fantastic. You are an amazing sculptor. I think when I attempt antlers, I may make them separate and glue them on after furring. Maybe I'll even paint everything first, make it that much easier. But that will bring its own set of problems I imagine!

Khrests In reply to LovelyTwistofNature [2012-01-05 05:30:45 +0000 UTC]

I just made a wire base for the antlers. xD And sank them right into the clay of the head. they're the things most likely to be broken off, so I wanted to make sure they were really well fastened.
