Description George would seem to have lived around the time of Constantine, in Palestine. That’s about all that anyone can say about the actual man with any certainty. His story is one of marvels. In my opinion his most fantastical feat (besides resurrecting after being chopped to pieces three times, raising the dead just to baptize them, and destroying armies in seconds) is the story of a battle with a dragon to save a princess. To me, these stories of the struggles against actual dragons or the dragon within are compatible, just a different way of conceptualizing something we can feel and experience but not necessarily see.
In this project, I depict St. George the dragon-slayer, but not wearing a suit of armor, and slaying a different sort of dragon. I wanted to use the imagery of St. George, or even dragon-slayers in general as a metaphor for the internal monster fights that people are having privately all around us. In the image, all around St. George is a swirling mess of thorns and screaming faces, even his own horse is freaking out, but the saint is calm and collected, and deals a triumphant blow into the beast.
Symbolically the horse represents the body, which includes feelings such as fear and anxiety. The saint is us but also reflects something greater; it's supposed to be something like the part of us that resists fear and anger, seeks to control the chaos of our mind, seeks to transcend our humanity and find meanings and truth, it's our capacity for doing good, or some such, etc.

Same basic idea as this project from last year:

This was my final project for my monotype class we had to do a project utilizing a weird transfer process - transferring the ink of a print-out onto the printmaking paper using acetone and the press. I constructed the whole image in parts, using a micron ink pen (for the fine hatch marks) and pieced it together in Photoshop. It took me forever!! like, three days (but that was 90% of the work) then I printed it in panels with a laser printer (it only works if you use a laser or a xerox printer) and transferred it one panel at a time (the tricky part was discovering a method for matching the pieces up). I later added some white with pastel and pastel pencils. I like it now the way it is, but I anticipate articulating it in another medium soon
