imo in serina, varpikes, or simply tribtiles in general are SUPER underrated for some reason, so yeah heres my concept

In a large, river slowly awakening, an odd creature moves. He is, on average about a meter in length, and he is a kind of tribtile, a primitive cold-blooded reptilian tribbet. He sprawls awkwardly, his legs sprawling, and always swaying about.
The warcrested varpike, a kind of medium-sized varpike frequents fish, changeling birds, or small tribbets. He saunters over to the river, craning his neck around. His striking yellow-amber eyes are his main sense — he also has a good sense of smell, too. He picks up a scent. Slowly crouching towards the scent, he finds a freshwater snark. Locking his eyes on his target, he extends his jaw and snaps up the hapless snail, killing it with one swift bite. The tribbet consumes his prey, and trots leisurely towards the shore.

The Warcrested Varpike is a heavily sexually dimorphic species, with a large fin and a distinct crest — given the name — on its head. These specialised tribtiles have taken a niche that was once occupied by many birds — a piscivorous creature. But it isn't a picky eater — fish, both land and aquatic, snarks, birds, or sometimes even young canitheres.
Sucess for this species appears inevitable, as it will survive even until the Early Ultimocene. But such periods won't last, as it will soon, quickly become extinct in the cold world that is the Ultimocene, like the rest of its predatory relatives.
