Beaks are too short for storks, there's no black / white contrast, and I THINK I see darker spots on their faces, although honestly at that distance that shouldn't be possible.

You've got a point, the storks are so much more common here+ the distance, that I too eagerly assumed that must be them. Fixed ^.^

They are much more common here too.... to be honest I'm not sure in what parts of Europe they can be found (though of course, wikipedia answers that question XD ) So yeah, it's probably safe to assume they were cranes indeed :3 You lucky. You saw cranes :3
