To be honest these don't look so far from the way these animals look in life, unlike Stronsay Beast or Trunko. I'm bretty sure that a person familiar with life on the sea, such as fisherman would be capable of identificauon. I however doubt that author of those ancient images had any first hand experience with sea animals. These map monsters have so many features of terrastial animals such as their heads, presence of arms and legs, Often the only feature suggesting it's an aquatic creature is the fish like tail. And even those certainly weren't based on actual whales and seals due to everpresent scales. Therefore I believe that autohr simply didn't see real sea animals and probably only heard descriptions of them filling all that he didn't know with elements he was familiar with. s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/7…

That is indeed true, I cant really argue more. And I see what you mean from the images.

I think I caught one of those once, while fishing. Of course I was on a mixture of beer, marijuana, acid and opium at the time, so who knows just what it was that I caught.

It looks like someone heard a description for a walrus, but never had seen one in reality.

What a lovely ferocious boar-whale. The bristly hair makes it look so savage, and those fins remind me of boar feet! That blank eye is creepy as hell, too.
Ever heard of the illhveli (evil whales) of Iceland? They were a variety of monstrous whale species which were malevolent and had supernatural powers. A lot of them had faces and other characteristics of other animals, such as the cat whale, the mouse whale, the particularly freakish horse whale, etc. Very neat oceanic folklore.

Looks cool!
I was thinking, how about a scenario where the creatures "tusks" aren't tusks at all, but heavily derived lower jawbones.
