Description Wow, I almost forgot about this... it's been sitting on my hard drive for like two months.

Anyways, this is from when I was trying to figure out Ampelus's character design for the Dionysus and Ampelus pic (why yes, those would be the lines I worked off of in the monotone one in the middle there). Ampelus was Dio's first love, a shepherd near where Dio was raised during his goat years. And, like many of Dio's loves, he died a tragic death.

However, Dio's tears transmuted him into the first grapevine, where he's continued to live on. In chat!RP, we've already established that transmuted folk aren't actually dead, but still there in spirit, which is pretty much how Ampelus exists these days. On the bright side, he gets to have contact with anyone who gets drunk off wine made from his particular type of grape, which has been cultivated by the satyrs at Silenus's vineyard in RP. Which gave me an excuse to draw him in modern clothes.

He's a different kind of satyr from the type I usually draw. I had a few reasons for that. For one thing, there are several kinds of satyrs depicted in ancient Greek artwork, ranging from my normal goat-legged kinds to ones with just the tails, ears and horns, and since going by the myths, Ampelus is an avid tree climber, it made more sense to me to have him be the latter kind of satyr.

Lower right is intentionally left unshaded, btw. Since I used a gradient for his tail and ears, I wanted an unshaded base in case I ever draw him again.

Not a mistake. The ancient Greeks had several variations of satyrs - many early depictions of satyrs actually have the ears and tails of horses instead of goats, with everything else being human. I decided to make my Ampelus more like one of those, only I went with a donkey's ears and tail and little goat horns. ^^

He is. However, depending on which myths you go by (there were a lot of them), he was also very attractive, had long hair, and was raised as a girl by his aunt and uncle in an attempt to hide him from Hera. He was also referred to as "effeminate," and one of his epithets was "Pseudanor," or "false man." So yeah, my version of him is kinda girly.

Ah, your comment on the piece reminds me I have a couple of things sitting on my hard-drive. That, and a journal I promised to put up.
Anyway, I love putting myths in modern day, for instance, dressing a satyr in modern clothes! Well done! The small pictures beside it are nice too! Giving more depth to the character with a history of emotions.

*laughs* Thanks. Yeah, I tend to use sketches to develop and explore a character's personality. Sometimes, what shows up surprises me. ^_^

i love all your artwork--mythology-inspired ones especially--but i have to say that between the last picture and this i'm now particularly attached to these two :3 he's adorable, and you've made blatantly apparent that you can masterfully take on a satyr in any kind shape or form^^
where on earth do you find your information on all of these myths? it's like you've got some sort of ultimate Greek encyclopedia lying around

Thank you! ^_^ I'm particularly fond of Dio, myself, and hopefully I'll have a reason to draw Ampelus more (much easier now that I've got him designed!).

I've had an interest in mythology for a long time, so I've gathered a lot of sources over the years. I've got links to some of those sources on my Greek Mythology lens. Just scroll down through the gods to the Greek Mythology Links section.

i love mythology--Greco-Roman in particular--but i've not the diligence to find good, consistent, reliable sources. so thank you so much for the links :3 i'm actually a longtime fan of your works ( ) but i'm going through a new account now so i have to go back and shower your gallery with love once again. hope to continue seeing your usual spectacular artwork again^^

he looks So cute. he's just adorable. very sweet. good job on the hair in particular. nice style. i like the way the hair on his tail drapes. the leaves on the jacket are a good touch. the simple design on the modern clothes makes him seem even more like a nice everyday (except the horns ears and tail) guy.

Thank you! I was so happy when he turned out so adorable. The vines were a little nod to his ultimate fate (and, according to theoi.com , the meaning of his name). It seemed fitting.
