Description Anyone who knows me will know that I am a massive Brontë nerd. I've done pieces of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, but never The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and I was recently shocked to find how little of it I've seen on DA or tumblr, so I decided to make my own little fanart on it.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, as you can probably tell, is definitely one of the more underrated books of the Brontës and was written by Anne Brontë, "the forgotten sister." It's a real shame that it's so underrated, really, because it's such a good story and is still very relevant. It's about a single mother who runs away from her abusive, alcoholic husband to earn her living as a painter, only to find her past catching up with her as she gains a lot of negative attention from the people in her town and falls in love with another man.

It's an amazing book and I highly recommend you read it. Then, after reading it, I also recommend you watch the miniseries with Tara Fitzgerald, Toby Stephens and Rupert Graves...yes, that Rupert Graves. He plays the husband!

How did I miss this one before? I just started re-reading the book, which I think has helped me to appreciate this picture all the more. I love your Brontë illustrations!

Definitely needs more love. Helen one of the coolest characters ever, and, as you said, the content is very relevant even for today. I know this story about Charlotte prohibiting re-publishing of the novel and thus making Anne "the forgotten Brontë", but I wonder, if obvious feminist overtones played their part in scaring the readers away? It's unfair anyway, because they're part of the book's awesomeness.

Thank you very much! I can't help but admire Helen's growth as a character and I think the "Not All Men" reaction that the book got was a big part of its controversy and why Charlotte did what she did: she didn't want her sister to be remembered in such a way by the critics and I suppose Arthur Huntingdon's alcoholism hit too close to home for her.

After Jane Eyre, Tenant is my favorite book from the Bronte sisters! I adore this book, with its layered storytelling which isn't orthodox, composing of a letter and Helen's diary entries. it truly underrated. I wasn't aware that was Rupert in the series...I...well I'll just have to check out that movie again!

Thank you! It's a wonderful book and it really does deserve more attention than it gets. And yes, Rupert plays Huntingdon in the miniseries and honestly, I think it's his best performance.

I haven't read this novel, but at the Bronte Museum in Haworth, all the staff in the shop said it's the most underrated of the novels and they said it was their favorite (well, that's what they said).

I've been there! I'd say they're right in that it's very underrated (especially considering the fact that it's known as one of the very first feminist novels) and I highly recommend it.

Thank you! It is an amazing miniseries and definitely does the book justice...and it has dishy British men in period costume, which is always a plus.

That is the only Bronte novel that I have not read.  Your lovely drawing has inspired me to seek it out!
