Description

Hey guise! How many of you remember that game "Ecco the Dolphin" for the Sega Genesis? I know I remember playing it on my computer when I was little. It took us (my brother and I) forever to beat it, but we finally got it! Makes me wanna play it again for old times sake...

Anyhoo, I got this idea in my head the other day to draw Ecco as a merman. I thought it would be interesting, and I wanted to try my hand at underwater ocean backgrounds.

Speaking of that, I'm a INCREDIBLY thrilled with how the background came out! This was one of those pictures that I was so nervous about coloring, and I just took baby steps through the entire process of coloring the picture. But it was well worth it!

Okay, now for the real artist's comments XD

I colored Ecco and the gem first, and that wasn't so hard (the gem only took some patients) but it was the water and how the rock related with the coral/barnacles/etc in the picture. I started out by coloring the coral and stuff, then moved on to the tedious part of coloring the rocks. It was surprisingly hard to think of them as three dimensional vs. two dimensional. That, and shading/lighting is a little different underwater. Then I colored the cave, which came out a little darker than I intended, but that's okay. ^^

Anyway, next it was time to color the blue backdrop and I waited a long time before I did that because I was so scared of messing it up. But when I finally got around to it, I found that practicing it digitally (like on this picture: [link] ) helped me be able to pull it off better in this picture.

Then I used an eraser to do the rays of light coming down from the water and the reflections of the waves on the foreground: Ecco and the rocks and stuff. Finally, I used white-out to make the bubbles. =3

So yeah! That's that! Enjoy.

Oh! And P.S.... please don't associate this with that S.onic X Sh.adow fanchild thingy that I found all over the place when I searched for pictures of Ecco on here. Thanks.

I love the Ecco games, took me forever to beat when I was a kid, and this brings me back. Was looking for some Ecco fanart, came across this. It's lovely, and like you said the background is REALLY well done. He looks really good

Thank you so much, Grace!! Glad to hear it.
Ah! Cool! I really wanted this picture to bring back memories for anyone who ever played it. I'm glad to hear that it does for you.
You played it with your sisters, then? Awesome! I played it on the computer with my brother and sometimes my mom, too. ^^

Glad you like his expression! I wanted it to fit his character. Heehee...he does look kinda adorable now that you mention it.

Thank you! I like drawing mer-characters. Especially because of their hair.

Thanks again, Grace!

I've never played or even heard of Ecco the Dolphin before, but this is SO AMAZING!!! Dang it, Lexa! Stop getting so fantastic, will ya? Kidding, of course. XD

Ecco himself look wonderful! With the coloring, muscle definition and even the underwater effect of his hair! I notice the light of the gem reflecting off his skin as well, very nice touch! Now of course the gem is beautiful and the rays of light coming into the water are super realistic, but what is REALLY impressive here is the way you colored the rocks! I mean, I don't know what to say besides WOW! The depth and the texture of them is simply amazing! Congratulations on doing such a wonderful job! With every picture you just keep getting better and better!

Thank you so much!
Nevah!

I've always loved drawing hair with that underwater effect!
Ah! I'm glad that you noticed the lighting. And I'm really glad to hear that the depth on the rocks looks good! I was a little worried about that when I was coloring it. For the texture, I used a rough side of the cover of my sketchbook as a coloring surface.

Again, thank you so much!!

You're welcome!!!

Oh noes!

Really? I can't remember the last time I tried an underwater themed picture, but drawing the hair like that sounds pretty difficult!
That was a brilliant idea for the coloring surface! I often tend to forget about what a different that can make myself.

KittyCowLexa In reply to Lavender-Star [2012-06-15 15:22:21 +0000 UTC]

It is a little tricky: Watching The Little Mermaid for a reference helps. Though, I've found that it's less tricky than hair being blown in the wind. In my opinion, anyway.

Same here! Until I forget myself and accidentally color things that are meant to be smooth on a rough surface.

Lavender-Star In reply to KittyCowLexa [2012-06-15 16:24:04 +0000 UTC]

Come to think of it, it probably does! Hair in the wind can be pretty difficult too, I'm rarely happy with the results when I try to draw it.

I tend to color on a big smooth book or the cardboard back of my sketchbook, so I have the opposite problem.

KittyCowLexa In reply to Lavender-Star [2012-06-15 21:38:56 +0000 UTC]

lol! Ditto. I can usually sketch it okay, but then I try to ink it and it comes out looking all stiff!

Well, at least you tend to use the same surface consistently, so you know what to expect. Sometimes I forget myself and end up coloring on the rough side of my sketchbook.

Lavender-Star In reply to KittyCowLexa [2012-06-16 00:03:13 +0000 UTC]

Same here! Then again, my line art almost always look stiff in comparison with my sketches, no matter what the subject is.

True, but I still wish I could make myself remember to try different surfaces every so often.

KittyCowLexa In reply to Lavender-Star [2012-06-16 14:11:54 +0000 UTC]

lol! Yeah, same here. That's why I'll often scan my sketches before I ink them; just in case they don't turn out right.

It really comes in handy for rocks and trees. I need to remember to use that trick more often, myself.

Lavender-Star In reply to KittyCowLexa [2012-06-16 20:30:22 +0000 UTC]

I do that with my favorite sketches as well, even though I don't bother with it for everything.

I'll just have to find some way to get myself to remember it.

KittyCowLexa In reply to Lavender-Star [2012-06-17 00:50:29 +0000 UTC]

I don't do it with EVERYTHING, but I'm so paranoid of ruining things that I tend to do it with most of my sketches.

You could write it backwards on your forehead!

Lavender-Star In reply to KittyCowLexa [2012-06-17 22:37:44 +0000 UTC]

Same here, especially since I've been trying to put more detail into my drawings lately.

LOL! Why didn't I think of that?

KittyCowLexa In reply to Lavender-Star [2012-06-18 16:27:25 +0000 UTC]

lol! Yeah, that always makes a big difference. Especially when you're trying out different shading styles. XD

creative idea and also looks cute. I used to play that on the sega genises. the game was a bit boreing to me but it was mostly because I couldn't get far in it it was to frustrateing to figure out. Though I have it again they had a collection of old sega games for the playstation 3 but I don't much play it the graphics make my eyes hurt after being used to clear graphics on things like the wii and x-box.

It IS frustrating. The only way we (my brother, my mom, and I) beat it is through teamwork. Some of us could figure out some levels, others could figure out other levels.
