Description Been fussing about with getting a design set for Martin, and I've realized I'm actually pretty terrible at character design. :d

This isn't a terrible direction so far, but there are two problems - first, he's not quite saying "Martin" to me yet. Second, he isn't fun to draw yet. Both are going to be necessary if it's gonna work.

There's also a Gonff that stowed away, because, you know, Gonff. I've been having trouble with him too.

I think the sketch on the uppermost right hand corner looks the most "Martin" to me. I always, for some reason, imagined Martin as being short and a little rounder (younger) in the face. Scruffier too. And this was before I knew the abomination that is the animated series.

Regardless, I do like this concept of Martin better than most.

I actually enjoy this version of Marin better than any I've seen across deviantart...

I quite like the full body sketch near the top right corner; that one feels more like "Martin" to me, though I keep wanting to add the cheek- and head fluff from his TV series design xD I think that gives him a kind of "wild" appearance, which I think suits him.

The Gonff is perfect - that's exactly how I want him to look

I do think Martin would benefit from a bit more scruff, too. Maybe not quite as poofy in the cheeks, but he certainly doesn't have that "hard" look yet.

Well, it's more the challenge of making him match the style we want for all the characters.

In most of the Gonff drawings I've done so far, he's got long sleeves. This one was from a batch where I was testing out a sleeveless look X)

Pretty good so far. Who's that guy he's talking to on the lower left corner, under where he's being captured?

Ah, those are both Martin! One is all beat up and the other is full of righteous fury X)

Taren14 In reply to Kobb [2011-07-17 03:58:26 +0000 UTC]

It's like the righteous fury one is telling the beat up one "Get your act together! You've dealt with worse!"

If you're not feeling character designing you're welcome to go back to storyboarding, one way or another as long as the preproduction is going forwards that is a good thing. I'll chat to you in the meeting caus I'd rather you were having fun. Your input to the storyboard team was also pretty invaluable so that's fine with me. Eitherway just let me know your thoughts and I'll organize something else if you like. I personally love where these are going but if you're not happy then I don't want you doing stuff, this project both needs to be moving forwards and be a fun thing caus as you said "...isn't fun to draw yet. Both are going to be necessary if it's gonna work." I'll drop storyboarding then as I'm not really getting past my thumbnails but with my college work I can get this kinda stuff done quite fast. So maybe I'll draft all the characters turnsheet wise and do a few drawings as well and you can look over my work and add additions or something. Rather you headup the storyboarding team as you were doing great there.

I'm not averse to character designing, I'm just concerned I'm not up to snuff for it. Might have to move away from Martin and Gonff for a little bit, hopefully I'll have some ideas when I come back to 'em.

The "not fun to draw yet" refers to the fact that the design is still kinda awkward - they're not *easy* to draw just yet. And when all the "awkward" has been hammered out of their designs, they will be. X)

I dunno, I guess I'm generally concerned with my ability to commit all the time I want to this project. I want to help with every little thing, and between work and my webcomic project, I just can't do it all. Very frustrating.

Yeah don't worry I knew what you meant but it still applies as a whole to the project, if something is frustrating then one usually isn't having fun but rather beating themself up about it. I have no doubts that you can character design and as I said I personally think the stuff I have seen is great but if your time is short then perhaps doing something that comes very naturally to you like storyboarding may be a better option. Although it is up to you I don't want to sound like I'm trying to nudge you into anything you don't want to do; just seeing if I can find the best solution for the project and the people working on it, in this case yourself. I'll say it again I think you're being too tough on your work, it's looking great to me and if it isn't to you then perhaps go over it in passes rather than brooding over it? That way you can do your first get ideas down and then later on when you can look at it objectively you can pin point straight away what you don't like about the design. Also just reminding you incase this was blocking your idea-train, you are allowed to go away from the concept art entirely if you need to. I hope something in that helps you :/ just really don't want you feeling frustrated caus I've been there and it's not a fun place to be.

Maybe some colour will help bring them out? Particularly in the face markings if they're to have any?

Problem is that to me Martin will always be [link] and [link]

I love the strong jaw you've given him and how fluidly your characters seem to move. When drawing Redwall fanart I would always fall down on structuring their bodies to make them mouselike so I'm very envious of you!

And you're not terrible at character design. These are ten times better than the animations!

Oh my Gonff! I think of all the Redwall characters, he's my favorite right beside Basil and Cheek. This is the bestest.

I like your cartoony style, it seems very smooth and "relaxed" to me.

I can't manage it, I'm hooked on realism. :C

This is wonderfully awesome. I love your vermin, though, those say 'Kotir soldiers' to me!

But while your Martin and Gonff do look wonderful, you're right, they don't say 'Martin and Gonff'. Those guys are pretty tough to draw, aren't they?

Kobb In reply to Kelaiah [2011-07-16 18:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, every time I try to draw them, they're passable mice but don't exude the character they ought. I've been beating my head against this for some time - hopefully I'll make a breakthrough soon. This post is largely a "I'm really working on it, I swear - it's just hard" update. XD

Haha, yeah, its the same with me. I know what I want to get across with Columbine/Cludd/Sandingomm, IT JUST WON'T COME! Heh heh, but anyway, yeah...

But don't give up! I'm sure it'll come to you very soon.
