Martha and Mary being themselves.These two sisters and their brother, Lazarus, were friends and followers of Jesus, and they lived in a village called Bethany. Martha, the always responsible workaholic, was probably the oldest. She's known for telling Jesus to make Mary help her with her chores (yeah, I can't ever get my younger siblings to help out either), but Jesus gently corrects her by showing her that learning about spiritual things is more important than obsessing over chores.
Since there are so many Marys in the New Testament, this particular Mary is usually referred to as Mary of Bethany. I read somewhere that many Jewish people of the time named their daughters Mary in protest to King Herod, who killed one of his wives (also called Mary). As if to say, "So, how do ya like that, Herod? We're just gonna name all our daughters Mary!" Anyway, Mary of Bethany is one of the women who anointed Jesus with oil.
Sorry the anatomy is really wonky. I really need to practice more

Thank you! I later found that her name was actually a form of Mary—Mariamne. She was just one of Herod’s…several wives. :/ Yup, Herod had some problems.

I didn't know that about the name Mary, that is so interesting! I love the designs, btw. Mary looks very young, which is different from how I imagine them, but it does fit their character. Can't wait to see Lazarus!

Thank you very much! I didn’t use to imagine her as very young either because I thought she had some dark past. But I’m pretty sure I was confusing Mary with the other woman who anointed Jesus in a similar way. When Mary anoints Jesus after He raises Lazarus from the dead, she is ridiculed because she is “wasting” something expensive. When the repentant woman anoints Jesus at the Pharisee’s house, she is criticized because she is “a sinner.” So I think they are different people.
The Bible also never mentions that Mary, Martha, or Lazarus were married, so that could suggest that they were fairly young, but I can only speculate about their age.

Yes, that makes sense. For some reason, I just assumed all of Jesus's close friends were his age? I never thought about it in depth. Changes in age make for more interesting dynamics, though.
