their is something about the art i would like to say . The artist are just trying to show the image off (IN HINDUS) maa kali who is preserver of innocent ( PEOPLE REALLY MISTOOK HER AS A DESTROYER). the artist didnt tell the world that he is drawing a image of "A mother" maa kali - the mother of all creations . AND BY THE IMAGE I THINK HE DIDNT KNOW MAA KALI REALLY WELL . AND I SEEMS THEY ARE FROM SOME DIFFERENT FAITH . SO IM DESCRIBING WHO MAA KALI IS REFEREED TO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT HER IN INDIAN MYTHOLOGY.
(you will find my questions and my description to many different art which states that they have drawn maa kali. but i will keep explaining this untill the world see a mother in these images and not a destroyer. )
for those who dosent know of "who is maa kali in Hindus"? Maa kali is the mother of all creations
most popularly many artist mix "pauranik maa kali" (from durga shapshati written in 7 century BCE) with "trinatri maa kali " (from ling puran the 6th puran in all puran written in 2-3 century BCE) .
their are 4 different avatars of maa Adi - Kali
which differ in physical appearance and iconography . the artist usually mix the two of them here .
1.) The "Pauranik Maa kali " ( the name is given in kalika puran "section kali ka arth tatva") who appeared from the forehead of maa durga . her physical form as described in "durga shaptashati and devi bhagwatam" states that "SHE IS WEARING A SARI OF CHEETA SKIN", has a sickel in her hand as weapon, her tongue is looling out she has sunken eyes , and very long hair covering all around her and she is wearing a garland of human heads (51 to be exact) . (THE ARTIST use "the sickel" and her looling "red tongue" and long hair ) THIS AVATAR OF MAA ADI-KALI STANDS FOR AS A "PRESERVER OF INNOCENT" ( but here it is ignored )
and 2.) the "Trinatra maa kali " (section LING PURAN SECTION -"shiva tandava vernan") this is who appeared form the third eye of bhagwan shiva , she is a spiritual part of maa parvati who just jot mixed with the "karal vish" present in shivas throat and emerged out from lord shivas third eye . SHE has two hands has Three Eyes on her forehead like bhagwan shiva., SHE "IS WEARING A DEVINE DRESS", has a trishul in her hand , a crown of chandrama (moon just like lord shiva) and she has a sign of karal vish on her neck .and is wearing all different kinds of jewelry. her tongue is NOT LOLLING OUT NETHER SHE is wearing the garland of human skulls . she is dressed as a goddesses. (THE ARTIST use "the third eye" from here and "the trishul" and the chandrama crown) (AND THIS IS WHY IT IS SAID THAT MAA KALI IS THE AVTAR OF MAA PARVATI AND MAA DURGA. but we ARE REFERRING TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT EVENTS HERE WHEN MAA ADI KALI IS REQUESTED TO TAKE AVTAR. )
Well this avtar of maa kali was requested to end demon daruk . but it is said in purans that all the world feared her seeing her rage after she ended demon daruk . and they asked bhagwan shiva to calm her down. bhagwan shiva knew that the fear of gods is just misplaced and to show that maa kali can never harm any innocent one he transformed into a helpless baby (this is called as "batuk avtar") and started crying while lying on ground . as soon as maa kali herd a cry of an innocent child she immediately find the child and start nurturing her out of motherly love. So THIS AVATAR OF MAA KALI STANDS FOR MOTHERLY INSTINCT. and this is how bhagwan shiva clearly showed the gods that maa kali "CARED" more for that helpless child than she cared for destroying demons.
the 3.) third form is "maa parvati herself "- she was given the name kali and gauri buy narad maun ( a great god like saint ) ( ref Kalika puran - Section "Narad ji ka agaman") she is always dressed as a simple goddesses. and thats why it is sometime said that "maa kali ( they mean maa parvati) is the wife of lord shiva . she never wields any weapon BUT MAY BE SEEN WITH A LOTUS FLOWER IN HER HAND.
the 4.) forth form is "the adi yog maya "- she was requested by Lord Brahma ( one of the three gods ) to help lord vishnu to end "madhu and khatab " named demons. she is responsible to create the illusion of life itself . "maya" is her weapon. the most greatest weapon of all. ( ref - durga saptashati chapter no 4 section no 1)
it is the above two stated majorly people see and try to draw . well this art is neither representing any form. i dont understand from where the artist learned about the concept. or is he drawing any thing else .
AND FOR THE RECORD THE COMMON FORM WHERE SHIVA LYING BELOW HER FEET - THEIR ALSO SHIVA KNEW THAT THE FEAR OF GODS IS POINTLESS THATS WHY HE DID'NT STOP HER JUST LIED OF THE GROUND "PRESENTING HIMSELF AS A " LINE" BETWEEN PRESERVING INNOCENT & DESTROYING EVIL" - MAA KALI "NEVER, NEVER" CROSSED THAT LINE . BECAUSE SHE KNEW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESERVING INNOCENT & DESTROYING EVIL... SHE IS OUR PROTECTOR .
NOW I STATE FOR THE IDEA OF "THIRST FOR BLOOD". DEAR ALL REMEMBER MAA KALI AND MAA DUGA WERE FIGHTING DEMONS LONG BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF "DEMON RAKTBEEJ " AND AS IT PROVED HARD FOR MAA DURGA TO KILL RAKTBEEJ SHE ASKED THE HELP OF MAA KALI AND ON HER ORDERS (MAA DURGA IS THE GENERAL OF THE ARMY) TO CONTAIN ALL THE BLOOD OF RAKTBEEJ IN HER MOUTH. USING HER TONGUE AS WEAPON (LIKE THE NAILS OF BHAGWAN NARSINGH" OR THE THIRD EYE OF SHIVA) AND FOLLOWING ORDERS OF MAA DURGA SHE STOPPED RAKTBEEJ RE-ORIGINATION, AND SO MAA DURGA KILLED RAKTBEEJ (REF - DURGA SAPTASHATI CHAPTER 4 SECTION 8 - "RAKTBEEJ WADH" )
AND you Also missed the concept that she is the mother of all creation . all motherhood feeling comes from her.
EVERY MOTHER IN THE WORLD IS AN INCARNATION OF HER. EVERY MOTHER SHE STANDS FOR HER AND IN EVERY MOTHER SHE STANDS WITH US .
WHY I DESCRIBED THIS ??????? (IF THE ARTIST IS DRAWING MAA KALI , OUR MAA KALI )
may be you feel that what i have stated is just same or may be people who try to justify them self may say that i m a narrow minded person. but I feel it is "Art which gives form to imagination". and is the best possible way to spread knowledge and teachings . but if you draw wrong art you are spreading incorrect information and teachings to the world.
plus I JUST WANT THAT OTHER PEOPLE SHOULD GIVE THE SAME RESPECT TO MAA KALI WHICH WE ALWAYS GIVE HER AS A MOTHER, MY MOTHER. IS IT SO WRONG TO ASK ? .But this is not possible if people who know who is maa kali doesn't describe her correctly. ( I AM NOT SPECIFYING THIS PARTICULAR ART ONLY)
HOW CAN PEOPLE OF " DIFFERENT RELIGION OR FAITH " CAN WILL REALLY KNOW OF WHAT MAA KALI TRULY STANDS FOR ALL THEY WILL SEE IS JUST - "A DESTROYER" (WHICH SHE DOESN'T STANDS FOR)
SHE STANDS FOR MOTHERHOOD "NOT" SEXUALITY NUDITY OR VIOLENT RAGE.
she has "never" been described as without cloths OR COMPLETELY NAKED. the old images you see please notice clearly that she is wearing a skirt of severed demon hands . and her front is all covered by garland of human skulls . along with many jewelry she is wearing like crown, Bazubandh kamar bandh, neckless.... AND DEEPLY NOTE THAT ON ALL OCCASIONS IS IS RESPECTFULLY DRESSED
YOU ARE WELCOME TO GO AND READ THE REAL REFERENCES AND THAN THINK. (name of reference - Durga shapshati (part of markendaya puran), Devi bhagwatam by vayas , KALIKA PURAN, Shiva Puran, Ling Puran , Vaman Puran, Varaha Puran ) every puran here describes maa kali respectifully. ) than their is "kalika tantra" "the yogani tantra" (these are the most respected tantra books ) "kamdhenu tantra" "kankal malani tantra" (these two have indirect reference)
AN ARTIST SHOULD KNOW OF WHAT THEY ARE DRAWING and tell people exactly of what they are drawing. ASK YOUSELF WHAT IS THE ARTIST TRYING TO DESCRIBE ?
A DEVI IN RAGE - Which a Infant crying or a lying body can easily calm down OR " THE MOTHERLY LOVE " FOR WHICH MAA KALI ACTUALLY STANDS FOR.. SHE IS A MOTHER who is just fierce in protecting ones own child (we are all her childrens)
I HAVE RAISED THIS QUESTION TO THE "ARTIST COMMUNITY" who are drawing any image of our mother Kali" :-
1.) HOW CAN THEY DESCRIBE MAA KALI WITH LITTLE OR NO KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HER ....??
2.) WHY ARE THEY DESCRIBING HER THE WAY THEY SEEM FIT AND CALL IT MODERNIZATION. they all are creative they can draw any thing what they want so why are they so obsessed with the destruction of evil idea , or about the sexuality or nudity idea . ???????????
3.) i find people blaming society about the ill it has and stating that they are only responsible about the art? but why their art is to bannerize the evil ? why not draw the idea which will prevent evil FROM BEING promoted ?
4.) and why not to understand art as a form of message they are spreading in this world.? why cant you relate the mother of all creation "maa kali" with the mother we all have AT OUR HOMES ?
5.) why their is "no" respect in the art ( NOTE :- i m not talking about this particular art IM TALKING ABOUT THEM WHO THINK DISRESPECTING MOTHER IS A TREND , A STYLE, A COOL IDEA )
6.) WHAT DOES MODERNIZATION MEAN HERE ? IS IT TO SHOW DISRESPECT TO YOUR OWN MOTHER FOR MONEY ? (AS SEE MANY ARTIST CLEARLY STATED "ON HIS CLINT ORDERS" OR HERE IT IS SAID COPY-WRITE ?
SO FOR MONEY YOU ABANDONED TO RESPECT YOUR MOTHER ?
7.) WHAT REFERENCE IS BEING CONSIDERED HERE. ? DIDNT THE CREATOR NOTICED THAT HE IS JUST CONFUSED ? HE SHOULD FIRST CONSIDER ORIGINAL SOURCES MATERIALS NOT WEB.
8.) WHERE IS A MOTHER IN THIS ART . ? DO YOU REALLY SEE YOU OWN MOTHER WITH CANE IN HANDS ALL THE TIME.
9.) WHY ARE YOU PROMOTING THE IDEA OF MAA KALI SO WRONG AND CALLING IT MODERNIZATION.?
SO A REQUEST IF YOU ARE READING THIS AND YOU PAY RESPECT TO YOUR OWN MOTHER .PLEASE THINK BEFORE DRAWING ... PLEASE DRAW A MOTHER ... AS THIS IS WHAT SHE IS... AND NOTHING ELSE. DO NOT CHANGE THE IDEA OF WHAT SHE REALLY IS . THEIR IS NO MODERN THOUGHT THAN HONORING YOUR OWN MOTHER.
I AM SORRY FOR IF I STATED SOMETHING WHICH COULD HAVE HURT ANY ONE . I HAVE NO DISRESPECT FOR THE ARTISTS HERE OR ANY ARTISTS HERE . I ONLY ASK RESPECT... THATS ALL

Agreed that it is perhaps a tad too "sexy" to represent Kali. But even that can be overlooked because she appears angry and malevolent, as a force of destruction should be. Only issue I really take is that in most portrayals Kali has eight arms instead of four, and her tongue is hanging out of her mouth.
