Description This is a tutorial I made so I could share the techniques I've learned in photoshop since I first started. This particular tutorial will teach you how to make rain that can be used as a background for any photomanipulations or digital drawings you might want to do. I really hope this tutorial helps you to figure out a shortcut that will be a time saver over manually drawing your own rain.

A special thanks goes out to cosmosue, for giving me the idea to make a tutorial. I will also be releasing tutorials on how to make: Lightning, Fire (both real and cartoony), and Starfields. Chances are my next tutorial won't be til we reach the fall break, as finals draw near, and I have a LOT of work to do.

Another special thanks goes out to my Photoshop instructor, Byron Black. Possibly the most gifted person I have ever met when it comes to Photoshop, and a huge influence to my direction in college, and in life. Without him, I would never know half of the things I've learned in PS. Thanks Byron.

*edit* I originally had this as a picture. But I have moved it to the tutorial section. *smacks forehead* I need to pay more attention to the categories.

I don't have photoshop so I'm using pixlr, and i can't seem to go past step 5 because I don't think pixlr has a "stylize" tool (or I'm just not seeing it). Cna anyone help?

Is there any way to make the black disappear? Because the resulting rain looks great and is easy to make, but not very useful on a black background.

this is so simple! i wish i noticed this before...how would you make it so that the rain is actually falling on an object, like the cement or a person's shoulders?

this was so helpful! the only promblem is that my photoshop doesn't have adjustments, so i took out the noise and pixles in the dots by hand and then itt turned out great! thanks!

Thanks a lot for your tutorial. I've been searching for such a thing for a long time, especially how to create drops that really look like falling rain drops instead of just lines.

However, the 'wind' option is on my PS, but I cannot use it, and I don't know why! Luckily, smudge works as a substitute!

hey, your tutorial is really great and all.
thing is i have a little problem.
everytime i do this everything works except the threshold step never works.
i mean in the little preview box it looks fine and then i click ok and nothing changes on my canvas.
there is still the huge amount of 'rain'
is my photoshop dodgy or am i doing something wrong??

I also figured out how to make it into my own thing... FIRE! just add this step.
before the 'add noise' step do a circular gradient,(for a fireball) then "add noise" then gaussian blur, then after you Select everything but the white multiply it three times, for the fire's different colors then follow the rest of your steps! it will look like this-> Avery's Fire
