Interesting technique. I've a bottle of masking fluid somewhere that I've never used, this looks like something fun to try out with it, if the bottle hasn't dried out yet that is.

I'm trying to get that effect, but the masking fluid comes off with paper... I've tried applying it thick, thin and watered down with water, but still when I peel it off, the paper uderneath it is mostly white... Can you help me with advice? Is my paper too thick or something?

koyamori In reply to CornyMistick [2014-01-09 05:07:40 +0000 UTC]

No~ That happened to me a lot too. Some papers like Arches have a stronger surface and will not rip as easily and will absorb more colour so it might work better.
In the end I stopped using masking fluid.

I'm just wondering, but how are the last two pictures so different? Did you wash the picture after peeling off the masking fluid?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koyamori In reply to wishfullDreamer [2013-09-08 05:07:40 +0000 UTC]

No, the last picture is a scan and the rest of the pictures are photos, so the colours look a bit yellower in the photos due to the light cast. :3

In pieces like kaleidofish and secrets to a whale, did you leave out the face when masking (I'm guessing you used masking fluid?) or paint them on later?

koyamori In reply to JeanaWei [2013-07-30 15:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Nah I didn't use masking for those. I stopped using masking fluid for many years.

Aaah I see, then would you suggest I leave the face out when masking or paint it on later?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koyamori In reply to JeanaWei [2013-08-06 13:41:23 +0000 UTC]

It might be better to paint it later! Depending on the paper and masking fluid it can rip up the bottom layer colours a bit.

BTW Is the character applied with masking fluid too? because it was so clean..
in my country there wasn't any store that sell those masking fluid. Maybe I'll buy it online.

Where would I be able to buy Masking Fluid? I get all my paints in an Arts and Crafts store, but I've never seen any Masking Fluid

Tiramiizu [2013-01-02 12:05:07 +0000 UTC]

wont it be that if i used a kneading eraser to remove the masking fluid, it would erase the lineart? then if i used my finger, wouldn't it smudge the drawing? how about you, what do YOU do to remove the masking fluid?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koyamori In reply to Tiramiizu [2013-01-03 15:30:31 +0000 UTC]

Once the watercolour is dry, it should be ok to gently rub off the fluid with an eraser. The lineart I usually do in watercolour as well so it doesn't really rub off.

I used to use Demco masking, but it wasn't very good at all.
Try blowdrying it maybe? C:
