Are you using a gummed watercolour block? In that case you should be OK.
If you are planning to use just one sheet of paper, it must be stretched, and for stretching you need a board.
If you don't have neither a board nor a gummed watercolour block, your experiment in poured washes will turn into an extremely hard to handle mess.
As for the drying: The paper will be totally saturated with water and paint. If you leave it flat, the drying process might be uneven and this might leave marks and striations you had not planned on.

Doesn't the masking fluid pick up from of the watercolor?
