Description They say it's not safe to wander the jungles of India at night. All manner of creatures prowl there in the darkness- hunting and waiting for a hapless victim to stumble into their path...

My entry for this months AMGC- I had to enter, August is my month! This months theme was to use only black and white traditional media, so seeing that most of my digital tools for art are packed, it was a perfect opportunity to brush up on my sharpie and inking work. Enjoy.

hmmm.... I've been looking at this on and off since you posted it and I keep wondering how much of a critique you'd like on it. I makes me want to put on my art teacher hat and that always gets me in trouble.

*drums fingers on chin*
What to do, what to do.....

I'd like as much of a critique as I give other peoples. I've got a tough skin- you can tell me its crap as long as you post up a pretty damn good reason XD
Is that not what deviantART is for? Helping out your fellow artists and discussing their techniques and work with them? I'm aware this has its fair share of faults- seeing as we both submit to AMGC, you know how it is with deadlines. I suppose, unless you post the piece as 'critique discouraged' I never understood those who recieved critique and got an attitude over it

Okay, you asked for it.

I like the picture but it's too busy.

If it's set at night, then why is the sky white? I think you would have had better contrast if you reversed it -- made the sky black and the foliage white.

It's also difficult to tell the central character from her surroundings. Her face and body blend right into the tree. In fact, it might have helped if there had been less linework on the branch -- or more, like fine crosshatching or something that would have provided more contrast.

Those are very cool little stylized bromeliads there -- I like those curly veins you've got there.

What are those creatures on the ground? The remind me of the bouncing heads in "Spirited Away." (Incidentally, that one in the left foreground, is that a broken tusk or a severed penis in his mouth?)

What? I had to ask! *L*

Severed penis. Definitely seved penis

I started the piece with Kali herself and added the background afterwards. While I liked the black foilage I thought the same thing, "Well crap, my sky's white." Can we say super moonlight?
While I agree she does sort of bleed into the surroundings- that was sort of my intent. I wanted to give the impression that if you were wandering the jungles at night, you wouldn't really notice her staring straight at you until it was too late. The crosshatching is a good idea- I think I might try that with the next one I just didnt want to go crazy with different pen techniques.
I was reading up that in the olden days people used to place stone sculptures of Hindu demons in the forest to scare off people- I thought they'd be something nice to add to the jungle scene, but am dissapointed I didnt have enough time to give them a more 'stoney' look.
Thanks for the critique, and dont be afraid to come in and hack away at my work- I'm looking for more than "ooh, its pretty!" comments

OMG! That rocks! Whatever you do, don't get in her way! LOL!! And don't make her mad either. That one looks as though she could do some damage. What brilliant detail! Faboo work!

i only looked at it briefly so i'll just say the first thing i noticed about it: the powerful curved lines of varying thickness. its beautiful to be looked at in an abstract way. love the detail, although it would take me a while to decipher whats going on.
love the comic book style!

wow, those little badger things are so scary! LOVE the ink job... the characters dont get lost, which is a VERY difficult thing to accomplish when there's so much black

Holy cat's meow, Spoon-lady! If only DA would let me expand your picture and let me see more than just the very upper part of it! I want to see all that detail! *shakes fist*

It took me a while to actually get my eyes to work this morning . At first, I thought there was some guy with a helmet along with a 'goyle! Is that a second pair of wings?

Err... anyhoo, this is TOTALLY awesome. There's so much detail, and your inking is spectacular! And you have that Spoon-ish more real than real stylized surrealish thing going that's so spiffy! Reminds me of something from Alice in Wonderland for some reason...

I love it ^^

Wow...FANTASTIC Kozi! I just LOVE the shading. Your pen and inks REALLY spiced up this one. So much, that I found the dimensions to be vertigo-inducing at first.

That, and Kali is sexy.
