Description The first of many photos I'm going to upload from This year's Dallas PRIDE Parade and Festival. There were oodles of hot guys walking around in underwear like this and posing for photos. Nice message on a nice tush, huh?

Of everything I've uploaded this is the one that stirs up the most controversy the quickest. Fascinating. o_O I never thought a bloke in his underpants would set everyone off like this. 47 faves in 12 hours ain't bad either, though.

I'll add thumbs of the others as I [slowly] upload them:

I'm not going to hide any of the less-supportive comments I've received for this photo. Whatever has been posted was done so both publicly and on the posters' free will, so whatever flak they get as a result of their own statements is their problem. I also would like other more moderately-minded people to see the lack of acceptance still present in the modern world for the LGBT community.

Edit: Woo! 100 faves in 18 hours! Thank you all so much!

(and 132 comments/125 faves in first 24 hours... Jesus this is so much more popular/noticed than pretty much everything else I have hahaha)

Until 1973, it was considered an illness in the United States to be gay. In other countries it was (and in some cases still is) illegal to be gay. In the countries in which it is banned, punishments vary widely - the worst being capital punishment.

Until 2003, sodomy was outlawed in many USA states. Some states still claim it to be illegal despite the 2003 federal law legalizing sodomy (which was directed largely at gay couples). It was in fact a gay man that sued Texas in the Supreme Court that caused the law to come into effect after his house was searched without a warrant on a false tip to the police and they walked in on the gay couple in the midst of intercourse. For comparison, it has been explicitly legal in several other countries around the world since the 1700s. In some cases, it was simply written into law at that time, and not actually banned before the law protecting it went into effect. Our neighbors Mexico legalized it in 1872.

Until 2009, members of the gay community (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and so on) were not recognized by federal hate crime laws.

Until 2011, hospitals were able to exercise the right to deny members of same-sex couples visitation and in many cases considered them completely unrelated to their significant other/spouse. This meant that they were also denied any right to consent for their partner to surgeries or any other medical considerations. Many of the horror stories the sprung from this situation were of people being banned by hospital staff from seeing their partner in their partner's final moments of life.

Until 2011 (later THIS month, actually), members of the gay community could not serve openly in the military.

Same-sex marriage is for the most part still illegal in the United States, with only a few exceptions. Even fewer states provide same-sex marriage laws that are truly equal to opposite-sex marriage laws. [link]

Same-sex adoption is still illegal in several states.

The list goes on.

THIS IS AN OPEN LETTER TO SEISHIN_TEKI - who blocks in a cowards fashion:

You have a lot to say for not caring.

It is very hard not to hate a murderer, but one should not. He must pay for his crime, that is certain. But hate should not be involved, instead, prayer that he will make things right with his creator. This is but a temporary place, none of us is forever......here.

But there IS a forever, and those prayers should be that he get right with God, not spend eternity wishing he had.

You are right, one may be gay and NOT engage in the behavior.

He did not, on this earth, call out homosexuality, but neither did he specifically call out any number of sins. He DID say 'DO NOT SIN". And point number two, Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are, ARE, one and the same. So, therefore, Sine God said that homosexuality is an Abomination, it follows that since they are the same, that Jesus said it too.

THE GAY MAN IS WRONG! IT SAYS SO IN THE BIBLE!
the bible also says every animal in the world can fit on a boat...
bigotry is also a sin, says that in the bible, so shove your self righteous ways and say hello to the 21st century. states will come around and let us marry. we deserve rights too!
i love my girlfriend more than i could ever love any man, and i know she loves me. generally, people who get so bent out of shape about gays showing their pride are people who have homosexual tendencies, but are too afraid to let their flag fly for some reason. do you need to talk to someone? i won't judge. you can do that all on your own.
and to kproductions, i absolutely adore the pic. excuse my rant to this bible thumping creep.

"oodles of hot guys walking around in their underwear."

Yeah. Besides looking pretty, what have they contributed to the society at large that they can be Proud of? Its time to get past "acceptance" and start shoing actual activities that we as a community can be proud of.

Isn't it? Isn't that narcissicism at its finest? Last time I checked when Narcissus saw himself in a lake and fell inlove with his own reflection, he drowned. We are drowning in self adoration and the meat market that we bandy around every friggin year.

I do like the picture of the HRC flag, that I thught meant something deeper. Personally, I've had it with Pride Marches. Its one giant meat fest that sends the wrong message.

kproductions In reply to GeneralIriga [2010-09-25 01:37:42 +0000 UTC]

Isn't what? That's not what I said. The statement to be derived from my question is that they DO contribute to society. I believe the gentleman who is in this photo is currently in medical school to become a doctor.

As for the parades, they're flamboyant because it's fun, and people who go to see pride parades go to them knowing what to expect. The parades and festivals serve more to strengthen our own community and provide entertainment rather than further a cause. That being said, there were thousands of people making donations to their causes, signing petitions against DADT (as well as supporting the Service-members Legal Defense Network), distributing information and signs/stickers for current LGBT-friendly political parties and candidates, and so on. It's FAR from the self-adoration meat market you assume it is.

I really do not understand why some straight people are against gay/bi people. Seriously.. they are not doing anything wrong. They are people after all. And I really don't understand why some Religious people say that being gay is a sin. My father is a priest and he used to tell us: 'You shouldn't hate someone who is different then you. Whether they're black, Asian, white.. female or male.. gay or hetero..'. He always taught us not to hate anyone. Neither did my father hate gay people. He respects them and actually fights for their rights. He hates it when he sees some negative things about them again. Because like he said: 'If being gay would be a sin, then God would not set them out on the world to live'. And I absolutely agree with that. If God would hate them, then why do they exist? Love is no sin, love is something beautiful. No matter who's involved.

As for this photograph: I really love it! It has an amazing meaning behind it, and the photograph itself is wonderful

I am of the opinion that sexuality does not warrant pride as it is something natural and implicit, regardless of orientation But I support gay rights fully... and it is a nice shot!

We don't have any gay pride parades around here... probably for the best. I don't know how a community vastly composed of Mexican Catholics would react to something like that, but I really don't want to find out XD

seishin-teki In reply to kproductions [2010-09-21 07:24:14 +0000 UTC]

Of course I understand that there's an immense difference between being proud of belonging to the community, fighting for gay rights, etc. and being proud of implicit behaviors and feelings. I'm referring to the second one. After all, I'm proud of being Mexican but cultural and ethnical aspects were things that were taught to me and some even chosen by me so they kind of feel like an "accomplishment" of sorts. In other words, it wouldn't make sense for me to be proud of my mestizo race because I did not choose it but it does make sense to be proud of my mestizo heritage because this is something that I consciously chose for myself, if that makes any sense.

I've met dozens of people who seem to be proud of being gay (strictly speaking of sexual preference) as if liking guys over girls or vise versa were a badge of honor and rub it in everyone's faces. I find it quite silly since it's not like they chose to be gay anyway. And the more flamboyant aspects of gay parades turn me off, not because it's "shameful" or whatever it is other people were going on about, but because they really distract from the original purpose of the event. Too much flashy stuff can get repetitive as well. But if you were referring to being proud of the gay community and of taking part in pro-gay activism then I wholeheartedly agree with you that it's something to be glad for. Sorry if I read too much into it

Also, that person you were talking to in the link was really creepy. I don't like the I'll-pray-for-your-soul types; they're really awkward to interact with.

NaoiUme [2010-09-21 04:19:26 +0000 UTC]

First let me start by saying I'm bi, and this photo in no way offends me. However, I think the reason people in the gay community get upset by stuff like this is because it's not doing anything to further the cause of equal rights. I understand pride events are party-like in nature but people can still have parties while wearing more clothes. I agree with you that the coverage of the underwear isn't very different than a swim suit, but I think there is something a little more provocative about wearing underwear in public than a swimsuit. I think this just adds fuel to those who oppose us that think gays are all sex-obsessed deviants. I know and you know that isn't the case. While I am a big believer in freedom of expression (what artist wouldn't be?), I do think that sometimes we need to weigh the cost of that expression with what we want for our future. It may not be fair and it may not be fun but we are already second-class citizens fighting for equality. It's going to keep being a long fight if we keep taking two steps forward and one step back.

FallingThroughGlass In reply to NaoiUme [2010-09-21 04:41:57 +0000 UTC]

There really was only a small percentage of people wearing this kind of clothing.

I was there and most of the people were wearing t-shirts with catchy slogans on them.

As for the difference of underwear and bathing suits? . . . They're only different if you put the label on them. If he had a bathing suit that had that on the back, people wouldn't have had a problem with it. >> But because people have labeled it as underwear, it is offensive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NaoiUme In reply to FallingThroughGlass [2010-09-21 06:05:30 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree with you that it really is just about labels and what those labels mean to an individual, which is probably why I personally don't find it offensive. However as someone who is already fighting for equal rights it doesn't really matter that I don't find it offensive, but it does matter that the people who oppose us find it offensive. They are the ones we are trying to get on our side of the fight. They are the ones going to the polls and voting against us. Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying we should compromise ourselves until they no longer find anything offensive about us - that would be impossible. I just don't think walking around at a pride parade in your underwear is a major part of being gay.

As for the number of people dressing this way - it may have been a small percentage but the fact that it is not surprising at all to see people dressed this way at pride events everywhere just goes to show how well known this small percentage is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FallingThroughGlass In reply to NaoiUme [2010-09-21 06:09:34 +0000 UTC]

A small percentage is still a lot, I understand. It's the extremists that people notice. No matter how few in number. . .

It's like religion. We mainly hear about the right-winged conservative baptists who protest and yell hurtful things. . .so people get the image of christians from them. The small percentage of the extremists ruin it for everyone. I've had people ask me how I can be pansexual and Catholic at the same time.

Besides, I would never be able to do that a Pride Parade. XD I am perfectly happy fully clothed.
