Description A piece of art for a business plan competition based on a game concept by my friend Alex - [link] , wherein you play as an angel-soldier working his way up through the ranks.

This is my attempt to draw a generic Seraphim. They are, of course, one of the two or three specifically named types of angel that people know.
The only distinguishing description we find of them is in the Book of Isaiah, 6: 2-3 "Above Him stood the Seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew"

Searching for reference pictures, I was surprised that I couldn't find any piece of historical art that actually depicted them as covering their faces as per the only description we get, so I was left on my own to devise how it would work. I think I came up with a pretty decent solution (and I love the way it looks with the wings completely folded over the body like that).

This was originally intended to have a transparent background, but there are issues with photoshop's antialiasing and transparency in png's (semi transparent pixels come out gray, so the image has a whitish fuzz around it, and that halo causes some major issues). I also wanted to use a lens flare in the halo, but lens flare only really works on a background, so for the DA version, I went and made a background.

And, just for the record, this may, some day, be a copyrighted design for a game (although I'm not certain the extent to which one can copyright a non-specific character based on a physical description from scripture...)

NOTE: Seraphims are closest to god, they sing him hyms. ALSO: They're said to shapeshift.

Every angel is as powerful as the task God gives them requires them to be.
At least I imagine so.
Meaning, if God wanted to have sent a seraph after Satan instead of archangel Michael, he could have easily done so and you'd have the same result.

Revelation 4:6-8 also mentions the seraphim. i'm still trying to figure out if the descriptions mean there are eyes all over the wings as well. i love this pic by the way. with the little description we have, i think this is the best way to draw them.

This is the one! Such an intricate piece. So many thoughtfully placed lines (particularly those on the halo!). Well done, sir. How ever did you work out the composition of those six wings?

I can't take any credit for the lines in the halo. That's just a special effect from GIMP (It's called line nova. Makes a shape like that with transparency in the center, then I filled it with yellow and erased the outside lines.) It looks astonishingly like a monstrance, doesn't it?

For the wings, I just went and found a lot of reference pictures from byzantine art (most of which depict them as heads with six wings sprouting out of them) and fantasy art (which has some broader interpretations), almost all of which really looked kinda dumb, or completely ignored the veiling aspect of the scriptural description.

I liked this idea of having it look like it's wrapped up in wings, and sketching from there, those sort of four draped points created by the primary feathers were just kind of a natural result.

For the flying wings, it's actually kinda funny, I had two different ideas, so I went and just drew them both, figuring I'd just copy and flip when I decided which one to go with, but it ended up looking pretty cool with the different gestures.

That is really classy. I like the light effects and the halo especially.
