Dont know how well an obsidian sword would work in real life, but who cares. Got inspired by video games to make this one. Mostly done in 3ds max, some work done in PS and AI.Related content

yup, taking a better look at it, it looks EXACTLY like every sword in the brandish line from spiral knights (minus the obsidian edge and nightblade)

actually, native americans used obsidian for spear heads and things like that. i've even seen people make obsidian knives. obsidian works for weapons, just not very large ones.

that is a big sword. like the concept on the fuller, makes for a powerful delivery and good shock absorbent

Wow this deserves to be in a game, theres quite a few games where models can be exported from 3ds to their format, you should try it.

An Obsidian bladed sword would be very fragile, but it would be balanced by unbelievable sharpness. Obsidian, being a special glass, can be made sharper than diamond. Diamonds can be sharpened to within a few molecules of thickness. Obsidian can be sharpened to within a few atoms. That means that this sword's edge would not cut the skin of a person, it will pass straight through. It would also mean that any armour the opponent had would be useless, because the sword would pass through the armour up until it reached a certain thickness, then it would jam. This can also be rectified by sharpening the entire blade, not just the edges.
Overall, an Obisidan Sword would be very fragile, so you'd have to treat it with care, but so incredibly sharp that the wielder would probably be the biggest threat on the battlefield. Combine that with Obsidian's ominous natural black/purple colouration, and you have a fantastic sword for a villain.

some of your science is a bit off. it wouldn't pass through skin/armor or anything, it would still cut it all the same. and however shard you make it, it gets dull after every swing because of how brittle it is. smashing a big obsidian sword against good iron or things like that wont make the blade last very long, it may even shatter.

Sword looks great.
Think Obsidian is a black shiny glass like substance.
Breaks off in flakes with sharp edges.
Remember hearing about Natives putting flakes of in their axes.

wow this is great. It had a sword hanging on my back, this would be the one i would want. Except i would want a swort to fight legions of zombies. Why dont they ever make games like that. Oh well :+FAV:

hehe thx for the fav. yeah it would be pretty fun to hack your way through legions of zombies with a sword instead of blasting your way through with guns, however i think it would be a tad less gory and thats a no-no for videogames.

as long as there is some kind of poppage and exploadage of blood and flesh, a nice clean slice, although very lethal, is just not as gory
