Description

In the last week or so after getting work done for a production job I have, I tried to work on commissions but I still wasn't in the right frame of mind for it. I didn't want to deliver a sub-par piece to a client, so I doodled some Inuyasha fanart instead because it's therapy for me, and this happened. Another instance of a doodle on scrap paper turning into something finished. I wanted to play with some back lighting, too.

This is set in the middle of the epilogue and was inspired by a fic that I like very much called Granted Wish by Knittingknots. You can find it on FF.net here: [link]

I should be okay to work on commissions again now.

I like your style! Normally I don't like seeing Inuyasha in a realistic style, but this is nice. It looks almost Disney-esque.

I've actually heard that quite a bit — the not normally liking "realistic" Inuyasha art but liking mine. I deeply appreciate it when people tell me that, so thank you very much!

The anime first debuted in the US my senior year of high school (and before I went to art school, obviously), so when I first started drawing fanart for it I tried to do it "on model" in anime style. I quickly learned that I royally suck at drawing anime style because all of it was really stiff and lifeless... so I finally said "screw it" and started drawing them in my illustration style.

I was a '90s kid so I grew up in Disney's "animation renaissance" starting with The Little Mermaid when it came out when I was in kindergarten. All of those movies as well as Fox's Anastasia and Titan A.E. HEAVILY influenced my illustration style as an adult.

Well, yours is better than most. A lot of artists who try to draw Inuyasha in realistic style make him look like either a brainless thug or a 2-year-old girl. You capture his essence. Although if I were to draw the Inuyasha characters in a realistic style, I would make them look a bit more Asian.

KrisCynical In reply to Kitten-Bubblepuff [2014-03-12 13:43:07 +0000 UTC]

Saying that I capture his essence is another nice compliment that I appreciate... I always strive to do that with any character I draw, including commissions from individual people of characters from animes I'm not familiar with or characters they've created themselves. I always ask my commission clients to tell me about the character's personality in addition to their physical appearance for that reason.

Yes, I've heard that from people before about the lack of Asian appearances. That stems from my "method" of transferring anime characters into my style. I pay VERY close attention to the shape of the eyes, especially in the corners, in order to get the face somewhat recognizable (in addition to the shape of the mouth if it's noteworthy, like how Inu's mouth is always quirked a little on one side when he grins). Since the Japanese usually don't give anime characters Asian-looking eyes, they don't transfer as Asian as they'd be if I was being truly realistic.

I've heard the wide eyes of anime style comes from a Japanese fascination/obsession with Western culture, and for the most part our eyes are considerably wider (save for those with Asian ethnicity in their appearance, of course). So yes, for absolute realism I should have more Japanese features in my interpretations... but I don't 'cuz I take artistic license.

For Inu himself, though, and ALL the youkai in the series, I think it's interesting (and reasonable) to play with the ethnic appearance of youkai. The fact that typical anime/manga art style character designs often don't look definitively Asian leaves the door open for the possibility for youkai to not necessarily look Japanese, especially since many of them are physical embodiments of different animals rather than strictly Japanese humans. In Inu's case, the fanon is an akita mostly because of appearance (look at a photo of a pure white akita and you'll see a perfect match for his ears!) but also for the character qualities of physical brute strength, fierce loyalty, and the common legend of akitas being such fierce fighters that they've taken down BEARS.

But I digress. Anyway, yes, my human characters could look more Japanese. Even if I were to draw Inu as realistic as possible, though, I wouldn't strictly stick to Japanese facial structure and eye shape. I'd just keep that angle he has in the top outer corners of his eyes.

When I first saw him, I thought he was a cat-man. I would've given him brown eyes if he was my character, but I just love his golden eyes!
