I guess this is fanart since it's a jacket for a book...?

This one is going to take a bit of explaining. This is for our latest Illustration project, which was choosing a book we've read any time during our lives and making a cover for it. One of my classes this semester has been Children's Lit, and we recently had to read Lois Lowry's The Giver. Seeing as how I really liked the book, I decided to use it for my project. For those of you who have read it, you don't need to read the summary I'm about to give.

If you haven't read the book and don't want to know what all it's about, skip this.

The book takes place sometime in the future when people live in communities. "Sameness" has been put in place for generations, to where everything is uniform, orderly, and controlled. People don't see color, the land around them is flat with uniform buildings and plants, they don't know what animals are, and the weather is always 72 degrees and sunny. Once members of the community are old enough to have "stirrings" (aka sexual desires) they're given medication that makes the urge disappear. Marriages are applied for and matched up by the community's committee, and each family gets one male and one female child which they apply for if they want them. Each member of the community is assigned a job at the age of 12 by the committee, and they can't do anything else except that. Books aren't allowed except for those used in school and the book of community rules which is in every household. Every household has the same pieces of furniture and are built in the exact same way. Everything is structured to the point that members of the community never make choices and are never stressed because everything is taken care of for them so they don't have to think and therefore are safe from making mistakes. This is all they've ever known.

In the community there is an elder called The Giver who retains all the memories of what the world was like before Sameness was taken over. Jonas, a child of the community, is assigned to be the new Receiver. He then starts going to The Giver who transfers all of the memories of the world into him. The memories range from pleasant things like sledding down a hill in the snow and sailing on the ocean to horrible experiences of pain, death, war and destruction. As he receives these memories, he begins to see the community around him in color.

Now, on to the illustration. I wanted to use The Giver for this project because I wanted to play with the concept of black and white vs. color. The concept of this piece is to contrast the world of the community vs. the world that Jonas discovers through The Giver. I used the memory of sailing on the ocean because I thought I'd be able to get the most brilliant color from a marine sunset. The female figure represents Jonas's female friend, Fiona, who causes him to have his first stirring and thus first dose of the suppressant medication, and generally represents the whole aspect of having such base instincts suppressed for the sake of control. The darker gradients at the top and bottom of the piece are for text placement of the title and author.

I really can't say anything else.
It would be wonderful to see this around as a book cover for The Giver anywhere.

That's such an accurate representation of the book! (which I love)
But it could also be applied to anyone feeling too uniformed, too commonplace.
Great job!

I remember reading in when i was in middle school, and then reading again later.
I was one of the few people in the class that chose "The Giver" instead of "The Outsiders"

The Outsiders is also a fantastic book. I read it over the summer in junior high for our summer reading project.

I absolutely love the contrast of this picture.. The dull, flat, monotrone landscape against the brilliant color and detail of the girl. It's very intriguing. I've never actually read that book but I have been told about it before. I'm interested in reading it if I ever get my mits on a copy.

This is lovely. I adore the contrast between hard and soft, color and B & W. I knew even before reading the title that this must be for the giver. Very well done.

The Giver is one of those books which, whether you liked it or not, stays with you, I think.

This has to be one of my favorite books, it’s so interesting to see so many other people enjoyed it.

I like your interpretation of the cover; it does show a lot about the books plot, and an interesting choice in depicting Fiona. I like how you made the town more retro, and the seashore is more realistic. An amazing use of colour I must say, the bright tones are perfect. I do liked how you didn’t make Fiona a complete silhouette and showed some details like the arms.

The book I must say is quite creepy, the part when Jonas discovers what β€˜releasing’ is deeply disturbed me. Everything being the same is an interesting concept, there is no war, no destruction, but still things seem corrupted.

All and all and awesome job! Favyfavylublub

I love this. It is strikingly beautiful and yet so simple. The book was one of the most ground-breaking things I have ever experienced. I was very young when I read it and it really opened my eyes. You've done such a wonderful job portraying it - so much thought was put into this piece.

Thank you so very much for sharing it!

I don't remember now... was Rosemary the girl that was making Jonas get "stirrings", or was Rosemary the Giver's daughter? Because it's meant to the the girl that was giving Jonas stirrings.

I love The Giver and your illustration is fantastic! I always thought the memory of the sled was the most key in the story, but there really isn't much you can do with color with that memory. The contrast is amazing and I love the girl's pose. Great job!

I'm actually writing up a lesson plan for my Teaching Literature class using The Giver. I was going to include an activity where the students would design a cover for the book and I was wondering if I could use your piece as an example. I would certainly credit you. Just let me know when you get a minute. Again, amazing work!

If you're going to read Gathering Blue, you probably want to read Messenger, which is the last of the trilogy and ties everything together and it makes a lot more sense.
