Sorry dude, missed this yesterday as i was away on business! I'll just say now, this is so getting my vote next week!!
You can check out a very, very old homage to Snake that i did from years back. This was way before i decided to really get back into art so it's a bit piss poor!!

oh, and btw, tomorrow is a Resident Evil character. But I ended up putting Wesker off till next week (I started on him though) so you'll just have to wait and see who it be tomorrow :-P

U know what? U suck! U and ur teasing!
Nah, i'm just kidding!! By the way i'm not a huge RE fan. I only played RE4 but loved it and cannot wait for RE5!
If i might make a request of you for this daily sketch project, would you consider drawing something from the Aliens universe? That's my fav movie-verse!!

lol RE4 was fantastic, played through that game like 6 times so far :-P Once I get Wesker done I want to draw Leon from RE4.
I can probably swing something from Aliens, but it'll probably be a bit just cause I gotta figure out how to draw 'em (seeing as I never have) but I'll figure it out :-P Probably something from "Aliens" cause I frickin loved that movie.

Aliens is my fav movie and i'd love to see you draw a colonial marine complete with Pulse rifle!! That's just a request though, you draw what you want good buddy!

Actually the marines are my favourite part of the franchise!!
I mean i love the films and all that but it's the Colonial Marines that hooked me! They kick started my love of that hardware-fi (i just made that up - sci-fi with a heavy dose of kickass hardware mixed in) based military genre!! It's no shock that films like Starship Troopers and shows like 'Space:Above and Beyond' and the new BSG have hooked me! In my time i have also enjoyed Babylon 5 and SeaQuest DSV!

yah, the marines friggin' RULED. And I think it was one of the first to mix future with modern for military stuff, before that it was usually sci-fi laser rifles and pew-pew guns and stuff like that.

Yup! He took the 'real world truckers' universe established by Scott in the first movie, applied it to the marines and just ran with it! And totally lit up my imagination in the process!!

I love Cameron's hardware-fi approach to film making! The future war stuff in the Terminator movies and the undersea stuff in The Abyss are both examples of this! But he really surpassed himself with Aliens!
To this day the Pulse Rifle is my all time favourite movie gun, surpassing anything from Star Wars... although those guns in Deep Rising are a close 2nd!!

naw, it's fine :-P you've come quite a ways since january though (btw how long before your Jazz mosaic gets finished?)
I was trying to figure out which Metal Gear Solid characters to do next whenever I get to do more, and I do want to do the other incarnations of Snake (Big Boss included) for sure, but I realized one of the next ones I want to do isn't actually a "character" at all...
REX.
So awesome...

KrisSmithDW In reply to gdpwatson [2008-09-05 00:50:07 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, REX was a friggin' classic. I can't wait to play MGS4 so I can (dunno if you've played through MGS4, but if you have you KNOW how that sentence was gonna end concerning REX :-P )
Yeah, I've spent the last few years homeschooling/retraining myself on artwork as well. It's one of the reasons I owe so much on my credit card still. I call it my "student loan" :-P I racked a chunk of debt up when I lived in an apartment on my own for a while and moved back home to help my folks out a bit. But the past few years I've only worked part-time and home-schooled my self when I was home so I don't really make enough to pay more than the minimums at the moment. So that's gonna sit there for a while until things go my way :-P Thus why you'll probably see mentions of "broke" in some of my Journal posts xD But it's my hole to climb out of! :-P
I've made a concious decision (after the TF: Animated mosaic I'm doing now) not to letter or colour any more Mosaics, just lineart. I a) want to see other people colouring it, and b) I can get them done faster :-P Colouring is far easier when there's no backgrounds and its only a pinup, I'll tell ya that :-P And I hate lettering :-P

gdpwatson In reply to KrisSmithDW [2008-09-06 09:30:08 +0000 UTC]
I think that's a good call on the lineart think. I've pretty much made the same decision myself! At least for now, as i would like to be able to colour at some stage and be able to do the full package!
I assume that you're not giving up colouring completely, just for mosaics?
That's an interesting story you told, and an insight into yourself. Sounds like you've made a real go of it. I was recently talking to a girl that i know who said she had some good art schools and always did well with it but never finished school. She said that she was considering doing a night class to get some qualifications. I told her to go for it and gave her a ton of reasons as to why it would be a good idea. When i next see her hopefully she'll have started he classes!
And yes i have played MGS4. I've actually played it through on a number of occasions!! The Rex fight is one of the highlights of the game!!

KrisSmithDW In reply to gdpwatson [2008-09-07 08:35:39 +0000 UTC]
naw, just stopping colouring the Mosaics. All my normal pin-up stuff here will be coloured, its just that a full page with multiple characters and backgrounds takes a LONG time. Just completed a Mosaic the other day and it was like FOUR days before it was done colouring. I coulda said "done" 4 days earlier with just the lineart :-P I had most of last week's daily sketches done in advance, or at least started in advance, because I spent so much time JUST colouring it.
Plus, I feel that I need to try a few more things with background colouring. Not totally strong in that dept yet, so I need to work on that a bit more. I can DRAW backgrounds fine, but colouring is tough, especially when you want the characters to stand out from it.
Yah, thats what I was talking 'bout, I NEED to pilot the REX. :-P
I know about everything that happens in the game, I never cared about being "spoiled" because its not the same to me as actually "experiencing" the game for real. So technically in a way I haven't been spoiled as I haven't played through it to see it all for myself. Yes, I know about the end part with "Dad" too :-P

gdpwatson In reply to KrisSmithDW [2008-09-07 16:15:15 +0000 UTC]
At least you've got your backgrounds sorted. I've not really ventured into that territory just yet apart from the Mosaics and based on those i suck!! lol!
As for MGS4 i don't know if you know what the final bit of gameplay is our not but i agree, you have to play it to really experience it. Knowing what happens is one thing, but actually playing it is something else altogether! Especially with this game!

is it the snake vs ocelot fist fight? I heard that fight (and the music that went with it) was just EPIC.

gdpwatson In reply to KrisSmithDW [2008-09-07 20:01:45 +0000 UTC]
Yes indeedy! Just wait until you play it!! You'll be so emotional that you'll forget it's just a game!!
Oh and you probably know this but keep yer eye on Ocelot's energy bar, in particular the name attached to it each round!

KrisSmithDW In reply to gdpwatson [2008-09-07 23:22:49 +0000 UTC]
yeah, it changes depending on what game's style of fight it is :-P
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KrisSmithDW In reply to gdpwatson [2008-09-08 09:54:01 +0000 UTC]
that, i do not know then :-P
all i know is that the fight switches between the 3 final one-on-ones from MGS1 2 & 3 and that the names change to the combatants from those games as the fight switches between those styles. The reason, I do not know other than the fact it happens.
Although if I can't get to play the game anytime soon there IS a dude that ripped hi-res the cut scenes and any important game play into one gigantic movie. If all else fails I can at LEAST watch the "movie". Still not the same as playing it, but there WILL be a point where it's like "fuck it, I need to know EXACTLY what happens" :-P

Where might one come across such a movie?? Sounds like it'd be fun to watch with a few beers!!
The reason that the names change is a key plot point to the entire story arc for Liquid Ocelot so i ain't saying nothing!!

Never played the games, but I don't know if I'll soon forget watching my friend play Sons of Liberty. It was fun, even if I had no clue what was going on. Poor Snake was barely in that one.

That one was a HEADTRIP wasn't it :-P Yeah, it could've used moar Snake. Funny enough, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater doesn't have Snake at all, but seeing it stars his genetic father Big Boss, it's pretty much the same character. Looks, personality and all :-P (Just really, REALLY pissed at the government, lol) And, Snake Eater was much more coherent (and actually made sense of stuff from Sons of Liberty)
