The next in my Disney animated film source material read-through was The Black Cauldron, based mostly on the first two of The Prydain Chronicles, but I read that series fairly recently (reviews here , here , here , here and here ) -- not recently enough! But still -- so I didn't reread that at this time, though I still thought Taran deserved a spot in this sketch series, along with Hen Wen, because why not? Also, there should be more Prydain art in the world, so here's one more little piece of it. It was really hard not to borrow elements from Disney's version, because their design really seemed to nail the peasant/youth/assistant pigkeeper look of that time period and general setting, but I think in the end mine is pretty unique to me.

One of my favorite book series. You did a nice job with this and your other Prydain drawings. Still stylized and animation-like but closer to the books.

Funny, I just finished re-reading the series and falling in love with it all over again. You should do Eilonwy and Flewdder, too. I think the film sort of fell short with them.

I really need to re-read it, I've been wanting to ever since the moment I last finished them, ha ha.
Oh, and you'll fine I have done a few sketches of the other characters from the books! You can find them in my Literature gallery or by searching for Prydain, but they're also located here and here . It's true, the movie took some liberties, but at least it managed to inspire me to learn more about the book(s) in the first place!

And it is pretty hard to differ from Disney's generic peasant boy Taran, but I think your Taran looks even more like what I picture when I read the books -- a little cockier than Disney's, but still with a big, heroic heart.

There definitely seems to be a shortage of art based on these books! It's interesting how some series last throughout the ages and others are recognized and cherished by relatively few. I'm glad to hear my Taran matches yours!

I don't remember this film in any detail--I must have watched it as a kid but I don't remember anything other than being scared, like the person above ^. I like the pig!

Yeah, it was a pretty scary one in parts, sometimes almost un-Disneyish! But it has its value, even if just to inspire people to read or know about the books in the first place. Maybe it's time for a rewatch! And thanks!

Cool! The Black Cauldron scared me as a little kid...the Horned King made afraid to sleep with out the night-light.
