Description This was supposed to be something completely different.
I had a small silver drop I made with the idea that I will have it sort of dripping out of a pipe, it was sitting in a box for a while and today I decided to drill a hole in it and finally attempt the idea... and lost the drop right after I drilled the hole
Anyway, materials used are; extremely thick walled stainless steel tubing (that I got in a trade with go buy his jewelry NOW!) steel chain, stainless steel ring (large) and titanium ring for the bail. The stone is an oval 7x5mm aquamarine set in a sterling silver setting.

I don't care, it is still Gorgeous! besides the drop was meant to be used on something else... that is what always happens, the stones decide what they want to be yesh I am a bit nuts but a FUN nut!

Well thank you It was a drop I made out of silver though, but you could that that the aquamarine pushed its way into the piece

While it may have been an accident, the final result is lovely. I love the contrast of shapes and forms, and how it creates a great sense of flow. Really nice work

It went wrong because you meant to to put a garnet in there right? Looks great either way man.

It looks better than the original concept sounds, original sounds too colourless...unless im way off on what it was supposed to look like lol

No you're right, the difference between silver and steel doesn't carry through too well in photos anyway.

Okay, so not as planned, but looks great. I think the blue stone might get the idea across better, even if it isn't the shape you wanted.

Thank you! I was hoping you'd comment because I wanted to as what you thing about the idea of replacing it with a blue topaz briolette. The aquamarine is top quality but the brilliant cut isn't too great for something that has to lie flat

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-05 21:49:19 +0000 UTC]

Hrm, I dunno. It won't sit flat with the tube anyway. Or were you thinking a briolette would be closer to the tube shape and thus behave better? It's worth a try, the aquamarine is very pretty, but blue topaz is a similar shade.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-07 16:30:58 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking it would behave better, also there is no pointy back so it can't really ever flip. I'm only saying blue topaz cause I can't find an aquamarine briolette, and if I do its going to be too damn expensive...

Oh I won't worry about it, I won't be buying either one... um, either about the only thing I can worry about at the moment is whether or not the 10 tramadol I just took will make a dent in this soul crushing pain. Sorry, I felt like being dramatic

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-09 21:52:22 +0000 UTC]

I did, thank you. The post office really isn't as bad as you tend to think it is Except when my MA-CT package went by way of CA... Now I need to hunt down settings or get to town on microwrapping

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-09 22:12:05 +0000 UTC]

I was just worried that the stones would scratch each other Oh and I forgot to ask if you'd like that little post ground down on the movement, those tend to be hardened steel so don't use your good cutters if you want to clip it off. Also, the 5mm garnet cabs, the cups have to be annealed prior to setting (which you already should know) and for most of those cabs it is necessary to sand down quite a bit of the cup. Hope you can use the stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-09 23:48:38 +0000 UTC]

It'll be awhile before I get to play with the cups. One of the garnets must have been a little chubby since he was quite squished into one of the cups and isn't looking to come out anytime soon either. Didn't notice any scratching. I should be able to cut down the post with my dad's pliers. And yeah, I learned that one the hard way already so far as not using good cutters :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-10 00:19:08 +0000 UTC]

Well the cups are fine not sterling, so you can try sticking something in there to move it around, though I usually just hold it upside down and tap the back, you can also try rolling it between your fingertips cause like I said, they're a lot softer than sterling cups. Another thing, it is sort of better to grind the post off rather than clip, especially since I'm fairly sure those pliers aren't flush cutters, just hold on to the side with the bigger gears, the vibration can unscrew them
Have you started using your dad's dremel yet? It almost seems like you don't want to use a rotary tool for some reason

Because I've several ounces of wire to play with, a fucking backlog of stones to wrap/cut. figure out what to do with, need my father to tell me where it is and help me set it up, need to afford to buy the bloody bits since none of his will do from what he tells me (he's a woodworker), and I have a full time job I do kind of need to go to.

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-10 03:59:08 +0000 UTC]

I just think that it will save you time rather than take up more time, and I can give you all the bits you'd need to get started

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-21 03:16:36 +0000 UTC]

Just trying to learn to use the materials has cost me more this year than my wire and stone supply has, I've nothing to show for it but a bunch of scrap metal and projects that costt oo much to sell even if I could manage to. And since my workshop is a stash of plastic containers and an ironing board it's not exactly congruent with proper jewelry making like you want. I'm sorry if wirework isn't good enough, but it's what I like, and to a large extent, what I can afford.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-21 03:50:50 +0000 UTC]

I was just under the impression that you were working toward learning fabrication, so we are probably having a bit of a communication breakdown, if wirework makes you happy in itself thats great, it isn't any less "fine jewelry" than a Faberge egg. You seem to think that I'm looking down on your work, I'm not, I just thought that you wanted to do things like soldering and stone setting as well.

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-21 15:06:04 +0000 UTC]

I would like to, but not as a replacement for what I do, and yeah, I am feeling like wrapping is a lesser art on da. Well, till you get to sviliabead's level As said, I've a bedroom floor and an ironing board to work on, and paying for access to a workshop and lessonsdid little but lose me money for the mechanic and doctor for the year.

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-21 16:24:02 +0000 UTC]

I think its quite the contrary, wrapped pieces seem to get a lot more attention. I wanted to get you a feature at one of 3wyl's groups a month or two ago, but couldn't find a single wrap that had less than 5 comments (a requirement)
Eh, I don't know, I still think that it was the teacher/teachers that were inept, not that you have some sort of "jewelry learning block"

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-21 17:40:39 +0000 UTC]

It still seems like the set stones I see parading by in the artisancraft watch get more attention. Perhaps it depends on the group.

In some part probably because I reply to most comments

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-21 18:24:02 +0000 UTC]

I still think that the most popular wrapper is more popular than the most popular fabricator, though I never actually compared. I don't really see people who do fabrication or casting with the kind of numbers Szilvia has for example...

I'll have to take a look. I was thinking of someone like Elly, but then again she does so many different things it's quite amazing. I guess I tend not to leave comments on a lot of fabricated things because I don't know what to say, or am afraid it'll be a case of and what do you know attitude.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-06-22 04:25:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, as far as statistics Elly has WAY too many things going for her (and to add to her million different talents she's also really nice)
I don't have that problem, you shouldn't either, this is a "general admission" website so your opinion is just as valid, personally, I find that really good pieces tend to elicit an emotional response from me even before I may notice the structural complexity.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to KubusRubus [2010-06-23 00:50:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and just enough of a geekiness to not be totally intimidating

I know it's a general admission place, but I guess I've gotten snarked at enough here and in class I'm not good about commenting. I really prefer to leave something cleverer than 'ooh shiny' and a bit more thoughtful, just doesn't always work.

It's awesome, I kind of like the stone rather then a silver drop, as the stone looks like a drop of water. It makes me think to how the water on the Gulf is so messed up though. It should be clear like that stone. I hope BP gets its act together and soon.
