I use both Cometbird (my Firefox alternative) and IE 9, actually. They both work just fine for me.

As far as I know, there are some things that Firefox can do that IE 9 can't, while there are some things that IE 9 can do that Firefox can't. They are both good browsers in their own ways.

I love Internet Explorer and I hate Firefox. I want to be traditional and I want to stay away from the status quo. And what's this techincal stuff? All I want is a browser that works properly, not a Computer lesson.

Internet Explorer is a fine browser. It is a shell object, and when used as such with Windows XP Pro and Server Enterprise 2003, works flawlessly as a lan explorer and local file manager, saving hundreds of kilobytes of RAM for the shell to operate. Since it is native to Windows and not third party, it works well in this regard.

The problem with IE is its inability to handle nonstandard code properly. This is actually a good thing, because it is this nonstandard code that has poked a lot of holes in the security of computers lately. It is all too easy to load a worm inside an ad, and if you have told the browser to render such objects, you won't like what happens next.

I sue IE. I am unlikely to switch. However, I stopped upgrading it at version 7. At least this can be scripted and locked down. IE 8 is full of open doors. Perhaps IE 9 will be better. But for all my surfing needs, IE 7 works just fine.

I never understood why people disliked IE either. I now use Firefox but I don't seen any difference (though I believe add-ons and extras are better and in greater supply for Firefox). In fact I have encountered more problems using Firefox than I ever did using IE however I can't be bothered to switch back. I like things the way they are now. I'll never say that IE is a bad browser though and I certainly would never say it's slow because I don't think Firefox is any faster.

Kurasii In reply to Pixellover [2010-02-18 22:09:23 +0000 UTC]

Probably mainly because certain coding doesn't work very well in IE. I'm in the same boat as you are now, but only because of noscript on Firefox. Thanks for the comment~

The angry Firefox fans come in when they slaved for twelve hours over HTML and CSS and they find that all their work was worthless because Internet Explorer isn't up to w3 standards. It can't even pass Acid 2. From a developer's standpoint, Firefox is better.

Just commenting for all the people who were wondering why people get angry at IE. Not a Firefox fantard by any means, please don't flame XP

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LucasVN In reply to ArtehPants [2010-02-22 02:10:30 +0000 UTC]

IE8 does pass Acid2, but it only gets 24/100 on Acid3.

But, IE9 is in the works, and the WC3 standards are a top priority for the development team.
A recent IE9 build scored 32/100 on Acid3.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtehPants In reply to LucasVN [2010-02-22 04:53:53 +0000 UTC]

I know, I figured that out after I re-enabled IE.

But, 32/100 isn't impressive, especially considering that both Webkit and Presto pass without any flaws, while Gecko scores 94/100. Eight points is a minor improvement, and I have very little doubt that they'll improve to a standard that is acceptable by the time IE 9 is out of beta. Also, both Webkit and Gecko both support a bundle of non-standard coding that is used by most developers across the web for HTML and CSS. WC3 standards are a good base, but IE seems to have ignored both the base and the frills.

Internet Explorer's layout engine is an atrocity and its ECMAscript rendering engine is even worse.

LucasVN In reply to ArtehPants [2010-02-22 05:10:53 +0000 UTC]

By very little doubt, you mean that you think they'll improve?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtehPants In reply to LucasVN [2010-02-22 07:43:08 +0000 UTC]

I have very little doubt that they will improve. Although I change my mind on that statement. XD With IE8 they worked with the Mozilla team to improve their browser. I think they could get up to par. I still don't like the closed-source properties of their browser, but it'd be nice for web developers to not have to make specific coding for IE, so I'll keep hope alive. I'm not so interested in web browsers that I keep track of their dev blogs, nor do I really want to keep track because I'm already flooded with RSS feeds, but I do keep a level of annoyance with IE 7 and 8 for how web pages were designed for them before they were designed for the more accurate browsers.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LucasVN In reply to ArtehPants [2010-02-22 18:55:18 +0000 UTC]

Okay. Yea, coding sometimes has to be written specifically for IE, just so it'll work there.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtehPants In reply to LucasVN [2010-02-22 19:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, when websites do that, they neglect the other more accurate browsers. It's why Opera doesn't work right with dAmn sometimes. >.O

Internet Explorer's layout engine is an atrocity.

Yep.

...IE seems to have ignored both the base and the frills.

You have to keep in mind that it was on hiatus for 5 years.
Still, I have hopes that IE9 will be comparable to the other browsers.

I've even subscribed to the development team's blog with Firefox's live bookmarks:
