Description For the sake of proper geiko cosplay, I was in need of a nice white han'eri for my kosode juban. I would have liked to get my hands on some nice obi scraps, but that wasn't working out - especially because I wanted something with a dragon motif to match the hikizuri I recently purchased:

Anyways, as I was thinking of where to get such fabric I remembered an old costume I once made and was ready to canibalize. It had some large pieces of white Chinese silk brocade with dragons on it! I was able to cut them up and make this han'eri. Along with that, I made an extra attachment at the back meant to keep the collar nice and low down on the neck (geisha style). I don't have it all that low in the pictures, though.

And again, there's the work of my new geisha makeup set!

Could you possibly make a tutorial for the strip down the back thingy?(I'm not really sure what it's called and I'm pretty sure I sound ignorant.I'm sorry.)

I got this one on ebay. There's a good seller on Yahoo Japan Auctions called Outlet Wig which sells really nice katsura. They have an annual sale in which the wigs go for really reasonable prices. I got one that was an unusual style and in brand new condition for about $90.

I almost has the same katsura like you,but i'm still new to it and its very clumsy. When i do a simple move the katsura fall.I tried to put a towel on my head but it didn't work.I was using the string on it,but i was harassed by a girl on this site she called me stupid and retared because there's a string on my katsura and i adore kimonos in chinese brocade. So i removed my photos from gallery.

Aw that's too bad that person was so unkind to you! It's true though that the strings aren't meant to help keep the katsura on, though. They're mostly used for keeping the katsura in place in the box during travelling. I think the problem might be that your katsura is too big. Mine never has problems with falling off - mostly because I can barely get it on my head. Some katsura are adjustable in size. You should look on the inside of yours to see if you can make is smaller anywhere. If you can't do that, maybe you can tape some padding on the inside of the frame so that it will stay on better. ^_^

you're right!i also tought that its was too big.I saw on ebay than some katsura can have differents size.Well i received the katsura without the box and i was still new to it.The padding could be an excellent idea to it,i'll try!thank you very much for the help!

Thanks! It's not much easier to wear the juban itself, but it does help keep things in place nicely when putting on the other layers.

is that strip down the back traditional?

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to Cushi-Wu [2007-05-12 06:20:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't think so. From what I know it's a more modern invention to keep the collar back. It's used in normal kitsuke and geisha kitsuke too.
