Did this a while ago after completing the original Vanguard pic, but never uploaded the rest of what i'd done for some reason.

The role of the Vanguard as a destroyer is to act as a body guard for other ships such as the frigate Ajax. The Vanguard, despite it's large size, is not designed as the primary striking arm of a fleet, but instead is filled with relatively close-range weapons to intercept threats to the long-range fire power of frigates and other ships.
Flak cannons, rapid-fire ballistics weapons and an array of lasers shield both the vanguard and other ships from incoming fire or strike craft, which are typically too nimble to hit with large missiles at close range.
It also has a moderate hangar area to store and deploy a small compliment of it's own strike craft, in this case, a couple of large Cobras.

The Ajax is the true fire power in this task force, a very cheap, easy to construct ship these frigates as essentially just mobile weapons platforms, mounting large arrays of powerful, long range missiles and modest armour. Most fleets are composed of multiple similarly armed frigates complimented by a mix of more specialised ships which primarily guard them or expand the capabilities of the task force. The biggest threat to these ships is anything that can get within close range of them, where their missiles are far less reliable.

The Cobra heavy attack craft is one of the largest craft carried by other ships, it's large size meaning it's payload can be catered to multiple missions at once. It's only down side is it is completely unsuited to atmospheric operation, and acts exclusively as a spacecraft. It's usual role is as a heavy strike craft, harassing other ships and exploiting tactical errors, but they can act as mine layers, heavy interceptors and fleet out riders. However, due to it's large size, it is very difficult to carry them in sufficient numbers on anything other than dedicated carriers, and has poor performance against dedicated interceptors.
