Are these built by randomly throwing shapes together? Genuine question, and if so you get some pretty killer results.

I usually do some simpler sketches to inform a general shape, and then do a rough 3D blockout (as you can see here) to test the shapes a bit, then back into photoshop to detail it further. It's back and forth.

You can see some of the very early work at the bottom there.

CCP Pointybits with the best Caldari art <3

Now you just need to get the balance team to rework ECM and the ships that use it, have.

is this some kind of orbital station or an actual ship? (I've never played EVE online)

They're the largest ships other than Titans currently, until we rescale Supercarriers to better reflect their intended size/power.

When we started on them we wanted them to feel like structures as we knew they'd spend most of their time immobile once deployed, so the idea was they'd look like giant towers of repping power standing out against the other, mostly horizontal and combat-orientated capital ships.

So are they mostly logistical and support ships or are there some offensive capabilities as well?

I believe they can field a flight of combat drones while they're not deployed, but it's not much combat capability for a ship their size.

Ah gotcha so it's an aircraft carrier

Nah, there's dedicated carriers that field proper fighters.

These don't really have an analogue in real life because they're basically there to fire magical space energy that repairs other ships while they're being shot.

a Force Auxiliary is basically a standard Sci-fi ship for a fleet that's expected to be away from supply lines and repair bases for a long time, basically meant for repairing other ships in the fleet, making ammo from found resources, etc.

It's a Force Auxiliary in EVE. These are the capital ships that now are in charge of logistics (a role previously occupied by carriers) and yeah, they're pretty damn huge xD. We had one on our POS and it was as big as the control tower for the Starbase. IIRC the reason it looks like a station is because it has its own hangar inside that people can store ships in, which is pretty handy if you lose yours in the middle of a fight in unfriendly space.

ah so its like a respawn/repair ship. Reminds me of the Brimir from BSG online. Basically serves the same purpose, though I'd guess its a lot smaller. EVE ships are fairly large from what I understand.

Well it depends on what you're using as a reference. Warhammer ships tend to be generally bigger.

True 40k is big. BSG is small though (BSG as in battlestar galactica not BFG battlefleet gothic, sorry if there was confusion there)
