Crotalus horridus, the Timber Rattlesnake.This was a large female who was very docile and curious, flickering her tongue wildly and pressing her face against the glass when I came to photograph her. She had the most vibrant colors I've ever seen on this species. Dark oranges and deep mahogany gilded with a bright rust and a deep black tail.

Isn't she gorgeous? She's the biggest, healthiest timber rattlesnake I've ever seen. And she was so docile, had there not been glass separating us, I still wouldn't have been very cautious. She seemed so eager to explore and see who I was, not making any aggressive signs at all.

I love snakes. Especially the venomous ones, since they have the coolest eyes ever.

Snakes are my favorite kind of animal. Every one is so unique and beautiful in every way. There isn't a snake I don't love.
God, I wished more than anything to hold her. She was unbelievably docile. I suppose you get that way after being peered at by tons of people over time, though. She was so sweet -- and BIG, too, my God. I can't wait to go back and see her.

There is an exotic pet store nearby that has an adult male king cobra for $2500 (whew). He is very calm; so much, in fact, that people who go there just to see him are disappointed that he won't show his hood at all. All he does is watch people and flick his tongue cutely. If I had the money, I would buy him in a heartbeat.
