Description Illustration for the Weekend section of the IDS! These are always a blast to do. When the editor asked the illustrators if any of us could do it, I jumped on it! Heck, I’d do it for free Here’s the article it’s attached to .

I polled my Tumblr buds to ask who the weakest Disney princesses were for purposes of this drawing, so if you disagree with the assessment, blame them.

(dirty secret: I loved the Little Mermaid when I was 7 and know the movie by heart)

But what about Mulan? She was tough!

I'm enjoying the picture though.

She wasn't a princess though!

I guess you're right, though she was occasionally in the princess toy line.

Yeah, I think they were just referring to the really famous ones. Mulan often gets overlooked, unfortunately. Pretty much all the "princesses" of color do. (see: Pocahontas, Tiana)

Tiana was everywhere for about a year after the movie came out. Personally I think all the hype over her beint black was more racist than the fact there wasn't a "black Disney princess" before. Can't we just enjoy the movie and character without looking at color? =/

Dah, anyway Mulan is always my favorite. If only Lady could be considered a princess she would be too! And Lilo! XD

They really pushed the movie when it was about to come out, but apparently it didn't do so well in theatres. That was probably the death knell for 2D animation at Disney and the last of their attempts to wring money out of PoC for awhile. I agree that really pushing the "we made a black princess! Give us ass pats" was pretty patronizing. Then Merida came along and they wanted ass pats for making a "strong" princess (when she was really just more of the rebellious princess trope we've come to expect; though she at least was able to avoid the romantic entanglements). When they start doing these things as a matter of course, I'll be impressed. Though they're a lot better with their representation on the Disney channel's live action shows.

What if they *gasp* stopped making Princess movies! You never know, they could go the way of TV and make 2D animation with Flash so that it's cheap and full of bugs like missing ears.

Merida was pretty much a selfish brat until the end of the movie, whichPossible. good for moral but doesn't make her "strong" necessarily. Truth be told, I enjoy being the one being taken carw of or "saved" by my man now and then. I don't know why it seems so bad to society lately.

I don't actually have the Disney channel, but things I've caught I'm passing have not looked well written, acted, etc... Disney Jr. is okay for my 2 year old. Thank God for YouTube, that he can watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse whenever he wants!

I miss Kim Possible.

Snow White must be thinking "Oh god, why did we bring Ariel here without changing her into a human?!?!"
