Description I don't think I'm satisfied enough with this...
But I have been working on this for a long time, because I really wanted to make it right.
And still, just look at my watercolor-suckery. My coloring is a plain mess.
And as time passed (as it usually does) the drawing started to loose the resemblence (as it usually does) and it came to a point that by now I know that there is not so much likeness with Joanna at all.
Ah, doesn't matter. Doesn't matter.
I just love this little woman. Her music is poetry and it has such an effect on me, anytime I hear it.
Every time I listen to her I find out something new, there is always something to decipher about her words. And when a new meaning dawns on me.. it’s such a beautiful feeling.

Forgot to mention: the paper texture is from here: [link]

And here below come some rambling about the artistic progress. (lol at word choice)(artistic progress my ass)
Please forgive me, and don’t read on if you don’t wanna be bored

So this began as a (very) vain attempt to depict her music. By using the symbolism in her lyrics - if you know her you'll see that here I was mainly inspired by Ys - but I tried to include as much as I could.

I wish I could find that quote that served as a starting point for this things-on-a-string thing. (I really began to like it)
I recall reading something she said about writing her lyrics, that it was like putting these pretty words next to each other and see how they react and rhyme. And line up all of them like you would line up the little stuff you collected on a beach after a long windy sunset. No, she didn’t actually say that beach-part. ^^
She said that for her, writing is something like beading, like arraging and aligning words together, and in the end every single one of them has a meaning and probably a lot more. And every word has it’s own purpose to be on its place.

So I tried to include my favorites from her patterns here an disguise them as knick knacks. :]
I drew "cold clay" too. I can’t stop laughing at myself for drawing so literally , but that was my intention.

Sigh, but I wanted this to look so much better.
Never mind.
Thank you for your music, Joanna

Don't beat up on yourself!
This is magnificent, and I can totally see the resemblance to both her music (Ys!) and Joanna herself.

Have you heard Have One On Me yet?
Funny how I think I would draw such a different Joanna for that album

How could there NOT be a resemblance? It's just so... her.

Good God, Have One On Me is fanTAstic. I've had "Easy", "On a Good Day", and "Good Intentions Paving Co." on loop for the last week. x3

The change in her voice really cause a shift in the tone of her music. I think you should do something for this album - it'd be really interesting.

Haha C: I had Kingfisher on loop.. along with lawlessness! but I really love the whole thing. Her words are so pretty... I want to chew on them all day, and draw little flourishes around every one of them.
My favorite thing is to see the progress in her.. everything.. melodies, thoughts and most of all her voice - it definitely matured a lot and sounds like she can use it much better now.
Well, I'd like to do something for this album, but not very soon.. I really need some time to grasp Have One On Me.. when actually I haven't even completely put my finger on Ys! not that I think I ever will

God, her words are fantastic. I wish I could write verse as well as she does, honestly. I try, but I'm not entirely successful. x3

The sad thing is that her voice changed like it did because she developed nodules on her vocal cords last spring, and after the routine shutting up for two months in order to... you know, not completely kill her voice, her vibrato had become apparent and the timbre had deepened. It's completely bizarre how that works. But hey, she's GLORIOUS.

Ys is fantastic. I still listen to "Emily" on a daily basis. Heee

Wow, I didn't know about that- though.. I'm not surprised at all... the way she used her voice, especially before Ys.. no wonder she developed problems with her vocal cords.. I mean, she puts an inhuman strain on them when it is pretty clear that they are not as strong.. not as much pressure she forces on them.. at least that's what I hear
Sometimes I wish I could just send her to my voice teacher, because she could do wonders to her voice and would heal it all completely.. nah,if I ever meet her, I'll know what to say ...
... I will tell her what a lovely creature she is c:

Oh, yes, Emily!
And I cry every single time I listen Cosmia

becausespace In reply to LadyLotte [2010-03-10 03:42:11 +0000 UTC]

She really did. Not to say it wasn't enjoyable - her odd, painful squeaks are one of the reasons I love her so much, despite the pain I'm sure her vocal cords were in.

Ooo, you sing, too? The world - it is a small place.

LadyLotte In reply to becausespace [2010-03-11 23:46:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I love you for saying this, I so agree! there is just so much emotion in her singing, and that's what ends up straining her voice.

I do

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

becausespace In reply to LadyLotte [2010-03-12 15:15:40 +0000 UTC]

Man, that is so true. Squeaksand squawksjust... so much feeling, neh? I still have a preference for her old stuff for that reason. I mean,Have One On Me is completely glorious, and I'm in love with her developmentin chord progressions and the darkertone of a lot of her new work, but the old stuff was just so... quirky.

Yaaay,singing! !!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyLotte In reply to becausespace [2010-03-12 22:26:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, as for me, I can't say that I don't like her new stuff better. Even if I do really appreciate where she has come from, and love the songs, the fact that her voice is much more coordinated makes her more listenable for me...
you know what, I think what I like the best about her is really the whole landscape. The progress, and.. everything, altogether
Even if she lost some of her quirkyness, she still has a lot left
Oh, btw, I should have said "I'm learning".. not really singing yet, but on the way (:

becausespace In reply to LadyLotte [2010-03-13 02:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I agree with you completely. It's really about the experience with her, isn't it? I just hope that she doesn't get any more mainstream, because I love her being the indie kid that she is.

Ah, well, everyone's learning. It's a process, and a long one at that. Heee

i actually really love this, and think it captures her well. not just in likeness, but in symbolic qualities as well.
the fact that her hands are small give her a delicate look, which works very well.
it's just wonderful, overall!

Thank you so much , I'm so glad that you see likeness in it! And I'm also glad you mentioned the symbolic bric-a-bracs, because I had so much fun drawing them and though they seem small and insignificant, I did putter on them quite a lot.
Thank you very much for the kind comment!

I think it's amazing... I love how sweet and poetic its atmosphere is! The first thing I thought when I saw it was this. But it's like a good song I think. After the first impression, you get to see(well, hear actually) and enjoy all the little things in it, like the details here! I really like all these you drew on the strings, and the lovely colouring too, especially in the skin! Great work!

I don't see the problem. I like it a lot, actually. From the composition to all of the detail and care put into the charms., AND, I love the paper you used!!! I am taking print making this semester so I am learning about paper a little. What kind of paper is that? Or is it a digital texture? Either way is it really warm and pretty. Also, I am a sucker for the rosy elbows!

Hehe, you know I just can't help myself, I'm addicted to reddened joints

Oh' forgot to mention that paper in the description! It's just a digital texture...,
because I'm always afraid to do anything real.
I love old or/and special papers, they can be so beautiful. This print making sounds very exciting! What.. sort of things do you learn there?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Slinkster-Bat In reply to LadyLotte [2009-03-13 23:01:58 +0000 UTC]

Well your digital texture work is really very pretty. I wish I had digital skills.

Print making is amazing!!! Right now I am etching multiple copper plates. You get to work kind of like you are drawing so it fells very natural, and whatever you etch gets printed so you don't have to think in reverse. My university has a print collection that includes a lot of famous artists, so I've had a real treat this semester.

Best wished my dear deviant friend!
