Description Wolfpark - 2011
Wotan, Beta Male - Main pack.

What can I say here that I haven't already said in the previous ten posts or so? Ahh Wotan, I did enjoy getting your kisses.

Maybe I should remind people these animals are wolves. They are not tame by any stretch of the imagination. They are hand raised as pups yes, to be socalized enough to accept humans as a part of their lives. But, these are not animals you would reach out and pet.

For one they are incredibly shy, not so much as their wild counterparts, but they don't come wagging their tails when you say their names. You meet them on their terms. Do not try otherwise, or insult their intelligence.

Intelligence you might ask? From wolves? Well, you'll have to make up your own mind on that. I can't give you my experience. For myself I stood next to them. I heard them howl. I watched them from a distance of less than a few feet and did not for one minute forget that they were wild, or intelligent.

Dharma, Ruedi, Wotan, and Wolfgang, again I thank you.

Yes, Seneca was alpha, Tristan was a young wolf, keeping Marion in line by sitting on her! Hard to believe so much time has gone by. Tristan and Marion are old, Seneca gone. I was privileged to have met them.

I know the feeling. Realistically, of course, I know they will not outlive me. But, they seem so full of life. To find them gone, or hear of them makes me wish for more time.

I sponsored Alyeska for years. When he died it was like a punch to the gut. Still hurts and he's been gone for years now. They are so vital, you really do expect them to keep going on and on.

Al. Wonderful fellow. I remember Pat telling us how he attempted a take-over of the pack. I still miss the Fluffies.

They pass on way too soon. All the more reason why I am enjoying the photos you post. Since it's a major undertaking for me to get to Wolf Park, I am very happy when someone else goes and shares their pictures and comments on the wolves. Thanks again for all your great pics!

I too was amazed by their intelligence when I was in the enclosure, not with this pack, but at an earlier visit to Wolf Park in 2002 and 2003. The wolves were like people at a cocktail party. Friendly with their human friends, very polite with the strangers. They clearly were thinking about what they were doing!.

Ahh, you were there during the reign of Seneca then, yes? I did adore that alpha. I remember the story Pat used to tell about him howling at the train to keep it away from the park. And, in fact, he did. The train never entered his enclosure once.
