Description

"Grief does not change you.... It reveals you."

JOHN GREEN, The Fault in Our Stars

I wanted to draw something that shows the current relationship between those two. While Siren hides her grief, Ayanna is open with it. She reveals so much of herself simply because she is still too young to handle it all alone and is grateful that Siren is there for her. Still, I think that the bond between the girls is not only there because they are partners and friends.

This picture is full of symbolism I'm a huge fan of that haha.
I don't want to explain everything, that would take too long hahaha
But to be honest, it means a lot to me because I think I was able to express everything I had on my mind regarding those two in this.

Siren belongs to

This picture wouldn't exist if my Internet wasn't dead for a week, so I'm thankful for that.

Ahh, there are so many symbols I don't know! I swear, every time I blink something new shows up. From the top of my head, a lot of symbols for change/transformation and death?
I am very curious as to why you combined the cage, skull and flowers (?). Can't figure it out >-<

But it is truly amazing how much time you put into your drawings Not many artists manage to surprise me time after time like you do!

Sooo, finally time to reply! qvq

Ohh, you spot new things every time? That makes me really happy, you know? Haha
Your guess about the symbols is quite accurate, but you're still missing some things here uvu
Let me explain then:
The curtain represents the past. While Ayanna's side reveals a lot (like the picture of her family, her two older brothers), Siren's side is fully covered up. And why is that? Well, simply put it's because Ayanna is more open with her past and told some children about it.
The broken glass of her family picture implies seperation, as she can't go back to life nor bring Konrad back who died for her.
The pearls represent tears and grief. Uhm, for the background... It's constructed like a spiderweb and symbolizes the influence of someone, or that one can't let go something. Uhm, what else..? Ah, the water! Well, the water is basically what both girls have in common but it also means that both drown in grief to a certain point and to keep the water from raising they need to deepen their bond, giving each other the support they need.
Well, the butterflies are a general symbol of reincarnation, since both girls are going back to the human world someday when their contract is fullfilled.
Now to the combination of the skull, cage and flowers uvu
The skull is representing Konrad's and a reminder to Ayanna that she's the very reason he died in the first place. By putting the skull in the little cage, I wanted to express that it can mean entrappment but also protection! (That's why Ayanna's domain has a cage featured in it haha. I'm ot finished drawing it though qvq'') The flowers are marigold, they are a symbol for grief.

Aww, that's so nice, thank you! QvQ
I hope I could help you understanding the picture a little more >v<

Yea, I knew there was way more to the drawing than my first impressions Didn't expect that much though, haha.

Thank you so much for the explanation! Some of the symbols didn't actually symbolize what I thought they would so it is nice to hear your own thoughts ^^ Knowing all of this I really love the idea with the curtain. Wish I was smart enough to figure it out on my own, haha xDΒ
Oh, I like the triple symbol. I didn't know what kind of flower it was but thought it had something to do with locking away or hiding her feelings for a certain death (wasn't really sure if it was her own or her brother's). Eh, I need to get better at analyzing, haha.

I love symbolism, so I try to give some of my drawings a deeper meaning uvu

Now I'd like to know what you thought the symbols meant ΓΆvΓΆ
The curtain wasn't that hard XD You just had to ask yourself what a curtain actually does haha, that's all
Ayanna doesn't really try to hide her feelings. She's pretty open with them which also makes her naive and that makes her an easy target for others. She can be fooled easily...
I'm trying to make more drawings like that one, so you'll get plenty of chances to improve yourself!

Hmm, I can give you a few examples of my own thoughts and guesses:

Butterflies: Pretty much the biggest reason why I thought "transformation" or "change". The two of them want to change, maybe to become a stronger person or to learn to trust eachother and bond.

Water: Water gives life but it also takes life. Both of them having their feet in the water and not being entirely covered could be that they are dead... yet still alive. The portrait in the water could be a dead person, a person who no longer have any connection to the living world in any way. Since it is under Ayanna's feet, maybe her brother?

Anchor: The anchor is behind Siren, so maybe she has something that "pulls her down". Could be an inner conflict, her past, etc., I can only guess So she pretty much has a very heavy problem that is bringing her down and she needs help to do something about it because of the problem's (anchor's) weight.

Might have been able to understand the curtain but I doubt it Even the most obvious things can be impossible to figure out sometimes, haha.
Please do make more ^^

Ohh, that are some really interesting thoughts! I like your interpretation!

The portrait in the water actually shows Ayanna's mother haha. It's a bit hard to see, but it is a woman >v>'
Her brother(s) are in the picture above, the one with the broken glass. Erik on the left and Konrad on the right, Ayanna sitting on his lap.
The portrait of her mother, I put it under water because Ayanna's memory is clouded and the more time she spends in Limbo, it's only getting worse. Though not to that extend she'd completely forget her mother or family!

The anchor behind Siren.. Well yes, there is something that "pulls her down", but it also says that she has determined goals she wants to achieve and something she can hold onto when she's afraid. For example her songs. A Siren's song is always full of melancholy (at least that's the form I like and find fitting for the theme).

Sure, I'll make some more!
Just takes me some time now...
