Description Probably one of my best works, but I have more work to do.Β
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1937 Oceanic Railways (OR) commissioned for the building of the eighty member strong Class 'E' 4-8-4, the only such class built by the national system proper, over the period of 1937-1940, and following interruption , completing the rest of the order from 1946-1948. As Oceanic Railways is not only a Metropolitan Oceanic enterprise, but one of other provinces (officially called Dominions), the model was sent to the other networks. These were Lauritania and Mauretania Railways, Animora Railway's smaller loading gauge precluded their use.

The engines were eighty in number, scattered across the previously mentioned dominions. As built, they carried a combustion chamber and three thermic siphons, a front-end throttle, a 285psi boiler pressure, and generated 70,000lbf of tractive effort. The engine and tender weighed 412 tons total, and used roller bearings on all axles and the main rods, including the 77-inch driving wheels. Some were tested at a pressure of 300psi (several class members would be retroactively up-rated for this pressure), and a few used a booster engine on the trailing truck which required relocating the cold water pump, putting it's tractive effort up to 82,000lbf when in use on grades.

The engines were assigned fast mixed traffic work, typically working the heavier second-sections of express trains and fast freight, usually merchandise and mails/parcels.Β The class worked from the mid-30s into the late 1970s, being replaced partly by diesels but mostly electric traction in the wake of electrification of OR's major lines and networks.

The E Class wore a number of schemes, some even streamlined, but the most prominent are the two displayed. 4414 shows the common appearance of the class from the 1930s to 1950s. During this time, depending on which dominion they were sent to, they carried the herald of that system on their tender, though their number remained the same as the dominion railways used a common class-based block numbering system.

4453 shows it's appearance that the class took from the 1950s on to the twilight years and removal from service. At this time, OR had begun assigning liveries to engines and rollingstock based on their duties. 4453 wore the scheme of OR Network, branding applied on passenger rollingstock used on major trunk routes and main lines. The OR would be changed based on region, such as AR for Animora, MR for Mauretania, LR for Lauritania.

By the '60s, a yellow or blue stripe would be added to the cab, denoting an engine prohibited from working a number of specially designated electrified main lines due to clearance issues.
