Calcination: One of the twelve vital processes of alchemy; the process of heating something with fire until it is reduced to ash.
Well, here it is, my entry for the Amulet Art Contest ! Woo! I think this is gonna be a really tough contest, since there are so many fantastic and accomplished artists in this fandom, 
Whilst both Emily and Trellis are my faves, I decided to go with Emily because everyone and their mother will probably be doing Trellis oh ho ho ho ho FANDOM FAVE FANDOM FAVE, 
NOW I NEED TO GO TAKE A SHOWER AND THEN LET THE KITTENS OUT INTO THE GARDEN

Seriously, Izzy, this is bloody gorgeous! Man, like...you have been improving so much in the last 12/18 months--I'm really impressed!
The shading REALLY brings your work to life--it almost looks 3D! Especially on the coat and gloves--even the hair looks beautifully done, what with the highlights and how the reds/purples blend together so nicely. Your Amulet stuff is so cute aahhhh
I also like the BG! The fire contrasts really nicely with the abstract purple background. It gives off the impression that Emily is in a dark isolated location and the necklace is giving off an imense power over/agsisnt the fire. I also like how it kind of looks like her hair is part of the fire. (As in, the sparks flying off onto her hair like they connected somehow...idk if they are but it gives that impression for me, if that makes sense. 
All in all, GORGEOUS WORK!!!! This is truely beautiful and I'm so glad to see you trying new things in digital work!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THANK YOOOOOOOOU you're always so kind I actually used a slightly different shading process than normal; normally I have a layer for flat colours and a layer for shading, but this time I was using oils and I didn't want any cross-contamination going on, so I ended up having a separate layer for all the different parts (skin, sleeves, gauntlets, cape, etc. etc.), and then did the shading for each on the same layer as the colour in order to get a vague gradient effect.
And thank you; yes, the hair-into-fire effect was intentional (see these three pages for (spoilery) context ohohohohoh), so I'm glad it came across as looking like that, and that the sense of power was conveyed!
