Graphite pencil drawing of a Tanzanian girl on A4 Daler Rowney Airbrush Bristol board.Pencils: Mars Lumograph (6H, 2H, F), Faber Castell 9000 (6B, 8B), W H Smith Woodless 9B, mechanical pencils 0.3mm/2B, 0.5mm/4B with Pentel with Ain Stein leads.
Blending: Blending stump from Royal Langnickel, Cotton buds and paper tissues.
Erasing: WH Smith kneadable eraser, Blu-Tack and Tombow Mono Zero Ultra-fine eraser.
Photo adjustment using GIMP: Removal of barrel distortion; Cropping to A4 ratio and removal of perspective distortion; Cropping unfinished edges of drawing; Adjustment of histogram.
A portrait of a beautiful girl in a primary school in a village near Nansio in Ukerewe, Lake Victoria, Tanzania. Ukerewe is the largest island in Lake Victoria and also the largest inland island in Africa. The photograph that I used as reference was Tanzania, girl in primary school which was taken by Dietmar Temps who very kindly has made it available for derivative works through a Creative Commons licence CC BY-NC-NC SA .

Her physical being is anchored, but her mind is far away - I know you will respond by saying you have just recreated the photograph, but it isn't true (and I don't want to detract from the photographer by saying that, but a lens is a mirror and the talent of the photographer is in capturing the moment/expression - A talent as great as that of an artist with paper and medium to work with). As an artist Your pencil brings a warmth and artistry, and you are so very, very talented. I have checked out your scraps - the artistry is in your blood!

It is so beautiful! What I love the most about this drawing are her eyes! They really tell a story and I'm curious as to what she may be looking at.

Thank you. If you look at the highest resolution version of the reference from which I made this drawing it looks to me as if another girl in a white dress, possibly holding a doll, is reflected in her eye. I could not draw that much detail, even a 0.3mm pencil has its limitations for me!

That is very interesting, Ntuli. I am always amazed at how the Internet can put me in touch with people that, until it was invented, would have been totally inaccessible. I have also had a comment on my Madagascan Girl drawing from someone from Madagascar, and on my Dakota Indian drawing, from a Lakota (my drawing should have been Lakota!) Indian.
