Description Costume based on Padme Amidala (Star Wars). The skirt and chemise are each layers of lining and chiffon; the sleeves are tied with ribbons; and the bodice is calico, spiralwire and satin-backed dupion hand embroidered with Anchor stranded cottons. I may work on adding extra embroidery and the matching shawl to it, but unfortunately its now too big for me so that's all on hold unless I find someone else who wants it!

Wow, I've seen this dress done so many times but even without some of the more tedious details yours blows most of them out of the water completely. Excellent job!

Thanks! I wish I had time for all those details, now I have more training I'd love to show it off and really complete the dress. Maybe one day...

Apart from the embroidery this was actually one of my easiest projects. There was almost no fitting so it only took a few hours to make the top and skirt, which is quite unusual for me!

it's sooooo beautiful. I wish I could make things like that, but I can't... not even to save my own life. Tell me... do you find sketches on the net or something to know how to make the dress or do you just know how?

I tend to do a lot of research, and do a lot of design sketches and plans before making anything. I like the challenge of seeing someone else's design and working out how to make it!

cool... I wish thought, that my country would be able to provide me with the materials I need but since it's a small country I live in, it's a bit hard to get them.

its beautiful! I don't have the patience for embroidery. Nice work. oooh, and whats spiral wire?

laurelin77 In reply to briliantlyfreakish [2006-02-27 22:48:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks muchly. I actually really enjoy embroidery, I find it calms me a lot and I rarely get bored of it (I think I'm insane!) And spiral wire is basically a continuous flattened coil of steel wire sold for corsetry I hope that makes sense!

makes sense, i guess i cant really imagine how the wire is used.

laurelin77 In reply to briliantlyfreakish [2006-02-28 10:00:31 +0000 UTC]

Its basically just a bit of support for the bodice. I tend to use it for things I make for myself because it gives more support than plastic boning.

ooh, I may have to look into that for myself, the flimsy plastic really doesnt do anything.

I know! Especially for me... I'm kinda busty. And it really helps to keep the fabric smooth because it bends two ways instead of one. Flexible yet supportive!

What size is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laurelin77 In reply to FenigDurak [2006-02-27 22:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Good question. The bodice is roughly a UK 14 I think, but it could go either way as it laces up the back. The rest is pretty much one size fits all - the top and skirt can be altered just a little to adjust to fit with drawstrings.
