Description Before I left Los Angeles, I took a Master Drawing and Painting class at the now deceased Associates in Art school, and worked on this piece based on a gothic/fetish model known as Industrial Bitch that I found while looking for a concept. Using her as the base, i added the tail and wings and background. This is not the finished piece, only the sepia tone under-painting. The piece is way larger than my scanner, so I have to get a good digital picture of it before I can put it up. There are a number of changes that were made between here and there.

I'll have to send a copy to the model once I get the finished piece uploaded to my computer.

This is so amazing! I have to say I do think the sepia works well, gives it an atmosphere, though I would love to see the completed one. I'm guess you won't be putting it up now though (unless it is in your gallery and I'm just being blind...)

Well, the original is actually a traditional oil painting, and unfortunately I think my oil paints are dead and gone, so any coloring job would be digital. If I can make it look good, I'd love to finish it one day. Just been so busy lately...

Oh right, that's a shame Well if you ever do get time to finish it, I can't wait to see it

I do want to. And at some point, I will. I still have the original as well, but I'm afraid I'll mess it up if I try to add color to it with oil paints at this point...

Ooh I can imagine, I wouldn't want to paint over something like that. That's why I love digital painting so much, you can always go back to a previous version.

And there is no "undo" button with traditional art. I can't tell you how many times I wish there was!

Yeah, that was a fun class. I'm no longer in LA and the school closed down, so I guess there's no going back. How sad.

It is one of the few traditional paint images in my gallery - most are digital. It was a lot of fun to do, but required a lot of space, and was messy.

Like to see the finished version but I do like this even though its just the beginning sepia ,love the detail on the wings .The lighting gives it an eerie quality ,anyway very cool !

My fear is that people won't like the finished version as much as the rawness of the sepia one...

Thanks a lot - it was a lot of fun to work in oils. A lot more expensive and messier than doing it in Photoshop, and there's no "undo" feature to rely on, but fun none the less.

Yeah, there's something that traditional paints can do that digital has a hard time imitating, though in just the past few years, Photoshop and Painter have been getting better and better at looking more and more like traditional painting.

Ereshkigal234 [2008-05-23 06:01:07 +0000 UTC]

Beautiful work. The textures and details are amazing. Especially for Oil. I love her pose and the wings are just fantastic. The background reminds me of pictures of the catacombs I've seen. The skulls look just amazing. They're visible but not too dark. The walls are just textured perfectly. I can't wait to see this in color as well. The sepia is perfect for the setting though. Makes it look like an old style painting you'd find in some necromancer's book.

Yeah, I like the sepia look, as well. And good eye, I used reference from the catacombs to draw the skulls in the background. Glad you like the image!

It's mostly completed, and has been for almost 3 years. It's been sitting in my work area. It was forgotten for awhile. Now I just have to get a good digital shot of it. I'll probably want to touch it up when I look at it again, but I don't know when I'll have the time to do that.

I'd love to know more about your technique. Are you going to glaze it in the future for color?

D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LazarusReturns In reply to Gelfayr [2008-05-21 23:59:41 +0000 UTC]

This is my first serious attempt at oil paining. I was taking a class in Los Angeles that is sadly no longer there, and I learned this technique. Basically, you make a small drawing of what you want, us a projector to put it on your huge canvas in pencil, then paint a mid-value sepia tone across the whole thing. After that, you start to use a rag to rub lighter colors where the light tones would be, and use darker sepia values to paint in the shadows and such. That way you can see how your values should be before you confuse yourself with colors. After that, you start to bring in the colors in glazes to create transparent depth. It was a lot of fun. I'll upload the color version when I can.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LazarusReturns In reply to jupiterjenny [2008-05-26 01:16:33 +0000 UTC]

No, they liked me and didn't dick me around. I almost turned that school around when I took over the office duties, but when I got hired at TLR I had to leave that behind, and the school fell back into trouble again. After I left LA it disappeared rather quickly, which sucks.

Yes, they needed people who could handle the business side of it, and needed to leave the teachers to only focus on the art. The teachers were fantastic.
