They have these, or a relative of theirs, in the florida keys. I love to watch them shoo the dust off the coral while feeding.
Wonderful picture.

Yes, it's true, there is a similar species in the Florida keys and Caribbean. Always nice and funny to see!

Really great. It's so hard to recognize the species.

Yes, often you spend a lot of time searching, checking books and websites, with no results because the species has not yet classified and it's still without an official name.
In other cases, species can be very similar and a simple photo is not enough to understand to which species the subject belongs.

You need a lot of patience!

Aww I saw one of these at an aquarium once, I'm so jealous you saw one in the wild! (along with all those other incredible creatures you're photographed!)

I like how the fish really pops out from the much more plain and colourless background. It works really nice!

Wonderfully clear, too!

This kind of background works well with colored species. With dark or colorless species, it's a big problem.
Very often lot of black sand is floating around, which is another big problem.

To get a clear picture is not always so easy...

Boxfishes are very odd. Juveniles even more (I should have some photos to add to the gallery).

Everything underwater looks strange and odd, but when you stop to observe for a while, you understand that every creature has a perfect balance with its habitat.

To observe the nature is always a great lesson.

Is there a chance you've discovered a new species?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LazyDugong In reply to Amoxcalli [2009-06-05 18:56:59 +0000 UTC]

It's difficult to say. Very little is known about many species. I've a lot of photos of unnamed ones, which I can't find in any book. But a photo is not enough to say you discovered a new species. It must be examined in a laboratory to verify it's different from other known species.

This one has something strange, I can't understand if it's a Lactoria cornuta or not. For sure it's missing a spine above the left eye, lost in a fight or a genetic problem.

Hmm, doesn't look like it's been lost in a fight to me. But I'm no expert.
