Description Welcome to the BNSF Tacoma mainline, travilling between Salem, Oregon and Tacoma, Washington. Originally built for the Union Pacific, it is now operated by the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railway. BNSF aquired the line after it was abandoned by Union Pacific only five years after its completion. The reasons for abandoning the line were unknown, though Union Pacific claimed that the line was too hazardous for trains. A strange explanation since the line passed all federal safety regulations when it opened. BNSF, undaunted by Union Pacific's claims, bought the line in fall of 2004. Trains passed through the line with no problems, until the spring of 2005.

BNSF train TS-42, pulled by BNSF5295 and BNSF5622, was making it's way to Takoma along Track 1. At around 20:16 local time, BNSF5622 suffered a brake down, causing the train to stall. Engineer David, the engineer that day, was ordered to wait until a helper engine arrived from Seattle.
The night was cool and cloudless. The moon was big and bright in the sky. Everything was motionless........for the moment. While David was waiting for the helper engine to arrive, he heard something moving in the woods. Whatever it was, he could tell that it was big. Suddently, there was a large explosion sound from inside the forest. Something shot upwards from the trees and into the sky. Shortly afterwards, it landed on the tracks right infront of the train. The locomotive's headlights revealed the creature....
....a large, red dragon with wings large enough to cover a Boeing 737. David, scared to death, remained motionless in the cab of his locomotive. All he could do is stare at the creature's big, yellow eyes as they stared at him. David made an attempt to call his brakeman, Frank.
"Frank." he called, almost wheezing the words out.
"Frank!" he said a little louder, but still whispering the words.
"FRANK!" he finally yelled.
"What?" Frank said from inside the locomotive's wide nose.
"Come over here!" David yelled.
"Hold on a second, I'm busy!"
"Lord almighty." he said under his breath.
As he continued to stare out the window, he couldn't help but notice that the dragon was not threatening. It was just staring, in what looked like facination, at what David thought would be a giant, metal snake to the dragon. Just then the dragon took to the skies and disappeared. In the distance, the lights of the helper locomotive were visible.
"You wanted something?" Frank asked, climing out from the loco's nose and into his seat.
David sat there, hesitating.
"Well?" Frank asked.
"Nothing." David said, "I must have been hallucinating."

Just to let everyone know. The locations in this short story are real, but the track and the events are not. I made everything up! So please, don't start looking at UP's or BNSF's web sites to see if I am correct.

Anywho, this was just to fill everyone in on what is going on. This manip is actually taking place a few months after this little incident. As it turns out, Engineer David continued to run trains along the line. The more trains he ran, the more he got to see of the dragon. One day he decided to take a little drive in his truck through the area and came across the dragon's lair. Surely enough, the dragon was there.
As time went on, the two became friends. Then one day, on a stormy day in August, engineer David saw his new friend flying right above his train. David couldn't help but smile. The reasons why Union Pacific abandoned the line were now clear.

The dragon, for being a fierce and scary looking creature, is actually quite shy. It prefers to stay away from populated areas. They do, however, like to stick close to railroad tracks. The reasons for that are unknown, though many believe it is for hunting reasons. Possibly to catch deer which have strayed onto the tracks.
