Description CS Once Upon a Time Lord at MSS Summer Event 2012

Rider: Flossy Nightingale
Country: New Zealand
Music: Stereo Love (cover) by Fuse
Class: Maiden Dressage KΓΌr

EDIT: Attempted to fix the reins. It... kinda worked... ish...

Doc's first show! Technically he's not been accepted yet, which is why his tag has no number yet. Once we get our number, it SHALL be edited! Hopefully we get it soon, coz I'm excited. I've never done a dressage image before, and in truth, I don't really know much about dressage, but I'm certainly eager to learn!

Horse reference: Don't worry! I'll find it again! With luck xD

Flossy ran her long fingers through the stallion's silver forelock, watching as her competition marched out of the arena. It was their turn, she realised, trying to keep from panicking. She always had butterflies before a show, and usually, those butterflies were munching on her intestines and screaming 'get the hell out!' And today was no exception. Doc, on the other hand, was as calm as he ever was, watching the bay and her rider saunter proudly past them; he gave them a congratulatory whinny as Flossy spurred him on into the arena.

He meandered lazily over to the centre as they were introduced over the loud speaker, the sound of the ocean's waves seemed to make him even less feisty than usual -- which was not a good thing, because any more relaxed and he'd be asleep. And that wouldn't be good for anyone. Flossy wondered what the penalty was for a horse sleeping during the routine; was it a couple points off, or a redo, or a disqualification? Or none of the above?

She hadn't much time to draw a conclusion as her music hummed to life and the man-eating butterflies began chewing on her insides again. She had to get the cues perfect; and that was no problem. She'd done this routine half a million times. But still! What if everything went wrong? What if she missed it by a fraction of a second! The whole show would be ruined! Unless the judges didn't know. Would they know? They'd never seen the routine so maybe not. But what if they did?

To her utter terror, Flossy missed her cue. Her throat closed up and she couldn't help but panic -- Doc, however, didn't. He'd done this just as many times as his rider, and considering there were no fears or worries to eat away at him, he started right on time, taking his cue from the music. After that, the rest of the routine flowed smoothly; Flossy calmed down when she realised Doc pretty much had it covered, with or without her, and managed to continue without keeling over dead. All the same, when the music stopped and she and Doc made way for the next competitor, she couldn't help but collapse into the painted stallion's neck. "Thank god that's over," she muttered, letting Doc lead them both to the practice arena, so he could watch the other horses prance as he grazed. Flossy gave him a quick pat and slid off, pulling his big head into a monstrous hug. "Good job Doctor," she told him, pulling a small bit of apple from the pocket she'd sown into her dressage hat. "We may yet live to dance another day."

LOVE THIS!

I just adore this guy! Those feathers are amazing and he has an epic tail here - as well as the bobble plaits His expression is the best thing ever and I love how Flossy's overlapping the background - it gives it some awesome depth. And I like the originality of having them over to the right, and not in the centre (that's me and my love of empty space XD)

As far as critique goes...Anna (~NightingaleStables ) is right - in dressage there has to be a soft contact on the horse's mouth which is usually taken to be a straight line from the bit to the rider's elbow. You'd also rotate the hand - that looks like western riding? - and hold the reins between the fourth and last fingers (I really gotta get my bridle tutorial up for this! There's a whole section on how to hold reins ). I also really like Doc's muscle coverage, but he looks a little short in the back and the underside of the neck would be a smoother curve - just for future reference Flossy's position is really good, I like that. Her lower leg could be a tad long (maybe she's tall?), but its in the right position, which is always nice to see .

On the whole, really, really nice! Good luck competing

Yay! Gracias amigo! I'm glad that overlapping worked out, because I drew the BG before hand and made it too small -dies- So really it's a cop out and I've gotten lucky that it works! I've got a love for empty space as well. I don't know why xD

Yes, there is much wrong with this picture anatomy wise and the lot. The dressage stuff I suppose I'll learn as I go along, and though I'd been looking at twelve different pictures while I was drawing it, I completely spaced out the reins! x.x like a boss. And I'm kicking myself for that hand. THAT is truly a rookie mistake! I'm just gonna blame it on the fact that I haven't drawn anything in two weeks. SHHHHH. For some reason I couldn't get his neck to look right, and you're right, he does look really short in the back. Awww.... next time! lol And no, that lower leg's just way too long and I was lazy to change it >.< lol!

Thank you! We're gonna hope we place, even with our rubbish reins and hands ha ha

Haha, what a wicked accident! But that's definitely why I leave my backgrounds til last XD And yay - empty space is awesome - glad you're a fan too ^^

I'm guessing you don't have the file saved with the original layers, so you can't go in and edit the reins? Just a thought, if it's really annoying you. Still, I know I pointed out stuff, and you've obviously spotted them yourself, but as I said, it looks great when you look at the overall picture, and as you said, it's something to learn from and take forward - so no losses

You're welcome, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you (only not literally, since I might lose the feeling in them after a while, and I wouldn't be able to draw ). At least they're relaxed, focused and moving nicely and the reins definitely aren't yanking him in the mouth, which isn't good

lol! when I leave my backgrounds for last, they always turn out looking half arsed xD Usually I wait until I actually have a picture so I can measure the size, but this time I was lazy and did the background before sketching the picture. And this is the price we pay! lol!

I might be able to, and I'll probably at least attempt it after I finish this pic, but I'm awful at editing my pictures on the computer. But nothing can be gained if you don't try! lol true, but it's definitely good to recognise what's wrong. I like talking it over with you as well since you usually offer ways to fix it xD

Tattered-Dreams In reply to LeavingNeverland [2012-06-26 11:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Not a bad price though. Its original - not disastrous Its a good thing that you experiment with different ways of compiling a piece.

Even if you do attempt it and it fails dismally, you don't have to upload the edited one, so its a win-win (and what's this? You're doing another pic? )

And aww! I'm glad you think it helps to talk to me ^^
