Description CS Angel Dust showing in Hunter Jumping at the ISI Jumping Classic
Rider: Flossy Nightingale
Stable: Ciwi (Kiwi) Sun
Country: New Zealand
Number: 591

Place: 1st!
(out of one though, because none of the other entries made it in on time. Still counts... I think? lol)
Dusty worked her hooves nervously into the dirt that crowned the foreign area's floor, and a twitch shook her polished withers. Flossy could sense the mare's uneasiness, and gave her a light pat on the neck as she straddled her, silently praying the hyperactive young mare wouldn't panic and make a break for it. She took a deep breath, trying to sooth her own nerves -- her stomach always churned before a show as her very imaginative mind went through all the ways she could possibly fail, from sliding over Dusty's shoulder to trampling an onlooker beneath the hooves of a terrified young arabian. It was all right with Doc, her mount of choice -- he was the antithesis of her. He was constantly calm and relaxed, and always completely confident in what he did. With Dusty under the saddle though, her mood could be nothing less than destructive, the kindling that fed the mare's own fears.

Flossy couldn't blame her for being nervous; this was Dusty's first REAL show. Her first official show; the mini ones they held at Ciwi didn't count, considering the only ones in the audience were enthusiastic mothers and agitated brothers who could think of an infinite number of places they'd rather be. She had students on her back then, and familiar horses all around her, and worked in her own arena. Here, she knew no one except Floss, and the smells were overwhelming, the setting alien, and all the horses completely foreign. It was a lot for a horse, she had no doubt, especially considering Dusty had only been 'showing' for the past two months. She was still uneasy in front of a crowd, but Flossy had learned that she fed off of her rider's vibes quite a lot, which was a good thing. Usually. Except, not now, because Flossy was failing miserably at calming herself down, and thinking of the effect she was having on the mare only made her even more nervous.

The fact that she had very nearly missed her cue tensed Floss up even more as she spurred Dusty out into the arena. The arabian lurched into action, and it was all Floss could do to keep her from breaking into a full gallop. The mare resisted a moment as she took in the audience with wide eyes, and the arena before her, and for a few terrifying seconds, Flossy thought she wasn't going to perform; but Dusty began pulled herself together after a little urging and finally decided to pay attention as Floss steered her toward the first jump.

The first one was sloppy, and though they cleared it (by a hair), Dusty landed hard and messy, costing them a moment or two as she recomposed herself. After that mess up, she began to remember her training, and the countless times she'd flown over jumps precisely like this at home. The next jump was better, and by the third she was at her best again, leaping over the hurdles with her old vigour, her proud tail up and streaming out behind her.

It was clear by the time they finished the course that Dusty was feeling very proud of herself, and it seemed to Flossy as though she were guiding a very different horse out of the arena than the one she'd led in; Dusty's head was high, her tail held up triumphantly and her movements quick and smooth instead of erratic and shaky, despite the fact that she was panting. As they left the arena behind, Floss dismounted and gave the mare a pat on the neck. "See? That wasn't so bad, was it?" she said reassuringly, and she was sure the mare gave her a poisonous look as Flossy led her off to cool down.
YAY DUSTY'S FIRST SHOW!!!! :whee: We're cutting it a bit close with this one, considering the deadline is TODAY, but better right on time than never right?! Not as catchy a saying as the original, but serves it's purpose.

Thank you! And yeah! Unfortunately the competition wasn't exactly riveting, considering she turned out to be the only one in her class! But we'll take it! lol!

I love this mare more and more every time you draw her She looks like she's having a ball, here! I love the keen expression and the pose is wonderful with so much movement ^^ She really looks like she's propelling over the fence

Nice story, too. I think you've got Arabian antics down pat XD

Epic stuff! Good luck in the show!

YEEE! Thank yoooou! One day I need her and Aphie to do a team anything together. Not entirely sure what though considering they're different disciplines, but I'm sure something will come along >D YAY! Thank you! I found a wonderful reference pic for this one actually, and I'm desperate to find it again so I can stick the link in; it really helped me with the tack in particular and the arabian proportions at this angle. I went through two other pictures attempting to get it right, and it finally worked on the third try with this one ref xD I'm not one hundred per cent sold on the face shape, but on the whole I'm quite content.

Haha thank you! It comes from reading up on Aphie I can tell you  For Dusty, my motto is 'what would Aphie do?!' and then tone it down a bit so some of her Daddy shines through lol. Aphie is my Arabian standard at the moment haha

Awwww, that would be adorable! Mommy and filly Aphie does have an astride saddle, and she does jump (side saddle dressage is just her thing I guess), so I'm sure we can arrange something for them

And that ref sounds epic. I really like how the saddle looks, actually, and the way she's holding her front legs ^^. And actually, the shape of her face looks really nice! Its slender and delicate - maybe a little straight - but the small muzzle is perfect. You're doing a great job drawing her, so don't dwell on it too much

Really? The fact that you're using Aphie as a standard for Arabians (and their spaz behaviour) is amazing! I feel honoured ^^. But you've definitely got the idea right, then XD - she can get herself in a bit of tizz at new showgrounds

It doesn't even have to be a show! They just have to get together somehow! Maybe they can do a trail ride together at some point or something, which might be better for the both of them (and us!) that throwing them into disciplines they're not entirely used to. Also that takes some of the pressure off lol and gives us more room to just have fun with it! Maybe we could do a mother daughter plot line thing of a ride through where-ever... somewhere.

Yay! Thank you! lol I'm actually quite happy with how her legs came out (the front ones anyway) despite the two different sized hooves xD And I'm glad you think so! It kind of quells my irked-ness for it a bit xD

Lol! When in doubt 'WWAD'. Wad. Gonna totally stamp that onto Dusty's stall xD

I like the idea of a fun trail ride...How's Dusty with water? We've got some nice canals and rivers out here...

or we could go galivanting about around Ciwi

Glad to quell the irked-ness And half my horses have a different sized hoof on each foot! I'm constantly having to watch out for that XD. But she did come out so nice ^^

And WWAD! haha; that's epic. Poor Dusty'll be staring at that cross eyed in no time

Hmmm... dunno. Never really tried riding her in water at this point. That could be interesting! After the pas de deux we should cook something up! I think maybe I'll send her to you guys considering it'll be her getting back to her roots xD It'll be like: 'this is where you were born! That's where you ate through the fence! Over there's where you were a pain in the bottom for the very FIRST time!' Ah memories.

Lol! Heck yeah. WWAD. Never drawn an arabian without my WWAD pencil, staring at the WWAD stable and meditating infront of a picture of Aphie xD

"This is where you ate through the fence!" epic!

And yep, that could be fun or a disaster, depending on how you look at it...

....ummm... You have an Aphie shrine! XD and I really need to make stationery with Aphie on it, now you mention it...lol
