I just finished this now - a homework assignment to draw a subject in color, warm colors for light and cools for shadows, no use of black. I'm guessing I kind of flubbed for using white, but the iridescence wouldn't have come out at all without it. And if you don't know already, this is my new veiltail betta, Desmoda. He wasn't helping much as he was always hiding in the back corner when I tried to take a look at him to get a better idea of his colors.Despite some frustration, I think this is an overall success.

So you used the pencils for the lines and the pastel for the coloring or mixed both?

I used a normal pencil for the very basic outlines for the fish and leaves, then went in with pastels, then combined with colored pencils, mostly around the head and in the scaled areas.

Aeres Nebula is multicolored... His body is pale pink and his fins have shades of blue and red and a bit of white in them. He's probably the prettiest betta I've had yet (and I've had a lot of bettafish)

Wow... I've seen a variant of that color pattern, and they are unbelievable, literally - it looks like someone painted them. And I really think the name fits the fish here! Awesome choice.

Yes! I like to grab a multi-color, if I can, when I'm getting betta (I usually get three at a time. One blue, one red, and one multi-color.)

Yeah! I was surprised. I mean, I've been told that these are fighting-fish and that if you put two in the same tank then they'll battle to the death, but I don't ever remember any of my betta fish biting /me/ before. They always just tried to evade me.

AHH! Awesome~ Desmoda is very pretty. I want to do art of my beta who died ;w; *misses him, sniffles* Sir Xiphias the Second had a blue-fading-to-iridescent-green body with purple-to-red fins that had thin lines of turquoise green at the tips. He was truly beautiful ;w;

Haha, your fish is grouchy? I thought mine was more... ditzy and cute in temperament. He wouldn't notice any food until I pointed at it. Eventually if anybody came and pointed anywhere with a finger, he would follow the finger, since he'd think food is there.
I always think it's creepy when they sleep and just float COMPLETELY STILL. D'8

XD It would be awesome to see a drawing of your fish, or at least a photo ^^. And the point about your fish looking for food were your finger is is hilarious. Hooray for behavioral conditioning!
I have to say after seeing Desmoda sleep a number of times now, I really have to agree on how unsettling it is - I always worry if he is okay, but then he starts moving again and he seems fine. I think mine has sort of turned into a narcoleptic, but he is just recovering from very mild ammonia poisoning due to some careless errors, along with swim bladder issues from bloating, so I'm allowing some room for irregular behavior. I think he'll be okay in the long run.
