Description Alright - NOW this thing is done. Beardie is more shaded, and some more scales are added to the corn snake.

Three species of snake (Western Hognose, Corn Snake, and...an unidentified snake) and a bearded dragon for a 'sensory overload/pattern' assignment for Painting II.

Acrylics on two panels of 18 x 24 inch canvas.

When you paint with acrylics, are you working with it thick or opaque or do you think out your colors for certain parts? Sorry to pester you with so many questions, I'm trying to get a better feel for painting.

I'm digging the different textures on the reptiles, and all the different brushstrokes.

Hrm... it's a bit complex! I wish I had made progress photos of this painting, as I'm starting to forget how I painted it. Basically I used blocks of background color to fill in the different forms first (opaque), and then I'll use a combination of glazes (watered down acrylics) and opaque blots of color to build up form and volume. That bluish-purple shadow to the bearded dragon's throat, for example, is a wash overlaid over the more opaque pointy scales that were painted beforehand.

As for thinking out colors beforehand, I had some color references for these animals, so I didn't use as much imagination as I might have without references. As such, I consistently strive for certain mixes of colors as I progress through the painting. In terms of planning for a color scheme before I started the painting, I....didn't, really >> I guess the choosing of certain species was my color 'pre-planning', though. : )

Thank you for your comment! I love responding to questions about how things are done - I hope I might have answered your question! ^^

Now that you mention what you have done, I can see it in your painting. That was very helpful, thanks!
