Description Brechin Captain of the Outriders; the noble stag at the start of Fire Bringer who meets an untimely end in the first chapter of the novel. I was quite upset that he died as I took quite a liking to this character with his strong traditional ways and being very respectful to his Hind, Eloin.

He is darker than his son Rannoch whom has a much redder appearance and fewer colours on his coat. Brechin, however, shows the colours of a mature stag whom has fought his fare share of battles and lived as a leader in a way that was lost when Sgorr took over the Herd. Here his antlers are in velvet at the first chapter, it was hard to try and show the soft velvet as apposed to the rough bony texture of a developed antler.

*This picture has now been updated, Brechin has scars, which i forgot to great embarrassment ... but now everything should be up to date Thanks to SilverWolf8i8 [link] for reminding me

I was sobbing at his death! Never before have I been so engaged with a story that I've been moved to tears before the first chapter is out. I love this book so much and I'm not even half done with it yet. It has to be my second favorite after Watership Down.

I love how you've drawn Brechin, he's beautiful and he looks majestic just how I imagined him <3
It's still sad though that he had to die so early and right before his calf was born

Thank you so much, it's always nice to know I have drawn characters the way people imagine them

Yes it was sad that he had to die, it was amazing to how David managed to get you to like a character in such a short time so that you were upset when he was killed

You're very much welcome :3 it shows you're a good artist and likewise with David it shows that he's a good author to be able to make people feel a certain way about his characters in a short amount of time

Brechin It's a shame he had to die early on, but it's a beautiful story even so, and just as equally beautiful is this drawing. I can see his whole character description in his appearance, which you brought to life. Fire Bringer is probably the best novel I've read. This is awesome. The end.

Thank you so much ^^ Yeah, I find it amazing how quickly you can like a character, although he was only in one chapter I think most readers really like him and remember him To me he is one of the key characters despite only being around for a short time

I think he really set the basis for what the book is about, and very excellently describes a distant animal society, not much different from our own. As a plot device, just that one character raises the bar for every story like it, including the Warriors series, for sure.

Anyway, I absolutely love the book... Clement-Davies is definitely one of the best fantasy novelists out there.

BRECHIN!!!love this!!except that the antler formation on this drawing is that of a white tailed deer rather than a red deer

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LeeDassin In reply to slavka11 [2009-11-03 09:27:57 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry I must protest, this picture was drawn from a wild-life photo of a red Stag. I know my Deer very well and get annoyed when people draw different species, I make sure never to make that mistake with mine.

There is a chance that the shading of the velvet makes it seem as though the antlers are surving forwards, but I assure you that this is of a red deer with the typical backwards branching 12 points, the antlers in the picture were lower back, possible because it was an older model Stag.

Sorry to snap back, But I am very particular about my Deer species, I even correct my Uni teachers when they miss name deer on lecture slides. I assure you this is a Red deer, not a Whitetail, I would not permit myself to make such a mistake.

Here is the link to the picture I used [link] and I can understand how bad shading could make it look like a whitetail.

No worries, sorry if I seemed a little uptight, I've been trying to teach my friends how to recognise different deer and they deliberately annoy me by calling them different things

I guess I am a little obsessed

lol i am too i feel your pain
my evil friends
anyway i think the reason i thought that they were white tail antlers is because i had bees just rereading firebringer and i got to accustomed to rannochs antlers on the cover and every deer has slightly different antlers
