Description Why do you travel?

To see the grandeur of the world, in all of its beauty and atrocity, to see the faces of the young and the old and to hear the stories, the ordinary and the extraordinary, behind them all.

On one of our many, many visits to cafes in Italy (those caffeine shots don't just fall from the sky, y'know), we ran into this man. Ever come across a random face in the crowd that made you stop and wonder about the person behind it? This was my man in Florence.

There was something about him that made me finally pluck up the courage to try my hand at portraits. It's the first time I've ever asked that of a stranger. I've never been thick-skinned enough to ask outright. But there was something different about this character... perhaps it was the easiness in his grey eyes beneath those hooded lids, or the uneven slope of the shoulders and the mass of grey hair that betrayed his age, or simply the wrinkles that framed his face whenever we asked for another cuppa and he smiled somewhat lopsidedly.

I wonder what things he's seen in his lifetime? I wish there was time to stay and have a chat, and to listen to tales told from a different perspective.

He'll probably never get to see this, but here is my tribute to him anyway, and to all the others in cafes large and small, who kept us alive and running with a simple cup of bona fide freshly-brewed Italian espresso those ten days in a foreign land. No one does coffee like the Italians.

Lovely image and lovely story. I only wish the image were sharper. The composition and lighting are great, and of course the man is awesome.

Those are *exactly* my thoughts when I saw how the shot turned out. Alas, I ddin't have a DSLR back then and so the focal range couldn't be tweaked. Oh well, sharper stuff next time

Oh thanks so much for the lovely words!! In all portraits I think the best and hardest thing to capture is a good expression. I'm glad you like this one.

Old school look, hey? Awesome!! I think it has something to do with his suit. This wouldn't look toooo out of place in an old western/cowboy film, would it?

Yeah it's a great shot and by old school I mean it really looks like an old painting of a bar in the 1880's or around that time, I think that was the time where a lot of English art was shown.

This photo really captures the friendliness and warmth that some bars can have.

I know what you mean-- some bars just have character... a certain friendliness that makes you want to lounge there allll day...

Mmm... he does have an interesting look to him... interesting in a good way, mind you. He has the look of a bartender to him; even if you took him out of a bar, you could probably still tell.
Looks kind... good choice of a target.

Good hear to hear, friend.

I kinda know what you mean about "the look" though. It's like how all butlers have the "Smith" look, if only because in English literature, butlers are typically named Smith/Smithers.

But on another level I felt there was more to him than just his day job. Mewonders about the things he's seen in his time.

Awww thanks, you always, always know the best things to say . Flattered, and am glad you liked it. You should try it sometime. You'd be surprised how many strangers will say yes!

Though I think if you're armed with a Canon 350D or some big SLR people will tend to take you more seriously. Big is beautiful!

Wow ... 1/8 sec ... some real steady hands you've got!!! Nice one, the warm colour suits his warm smile. And I wish I could have been like you - to be able to pluck up courage to ask permission for a portrait shot ... But just a thing, maybe should have not cropped his left hand.

And, lastly but not least, it looks like you've entirely enjoyed your trip Good for 'ya

The trick to getting sharper shots during longer exposures, at least for me, is to slowly let out the breath you just took in before the shot WHILE you're pressing the shutter. Just holding your breath doesn't seem to help. Try it sometime!

Trip-- fun?? No, honestly it was one of those trips that only looked fun in photos but had you goin' "when oh when am I going home??" during it. At least I have the pictures.

Great work here. Maybe he was just drunk all the time, go figure He certainly seems cheery and you did the right thing asking him! Whether they say yes or no, you pass up the opportunity completely by not asking. Eventually you'll get the nerve to ask anyone If you feel like checking out some new art, i've posted a few pieces today also.

Good for you for taking a risk!! I know it's hard to ask things of strangers, but often times it pays off! This came out beautifully! If you get another streak of braveness, I would take a nice print of this to him for a present, I'm sure he'd appreciate it, it looks fantastic.

Very well done!

Well, here's something that you could do that's pretty cheap...

Places like Walgreens, Fred Meyers and such offer Digital Photo developing, for something like .20 cents (American) per print. You just take the photos you want to get printed on a disk or a USB flash drive, plug them into the computer at the store, and print them off. That way you don't have to mess with everything
