Description This is just a little quote-collage-thingy that I thought of while listening to the song "Sadness and Sorrow" from the Naruto OST (I cry every time I hear it. T.T). I use it as the "artwork" for the song on my iTouch, so that whenever I listen to the song, this wonderful Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quote and accompanying pictures pop up. Enjoy!

Very powerful theme and excellent quote for all those characters, it really captures how it played into who they all are

Tsunade: lost all hope for the future after losing her loved ones, but eventually found it again through Naruto

Kimimaru: his lonely existence caused him to throw his life away in service to Orochimaru

Haku: losing his sense of purpose caused him to devote his entire life to Zabuza's dream and lead to his death

Gaara: a childhood of neglect and hatred caused him to try to purge his pain in blood, but after overcoming his pain he became in many ways the greatest of the current five kage

Sakura: Guilt over not being able to stop Sasuke and being ignorant of Naruto's pain and her unwitting role as a contributor has severely damaged her sense of self worth. That in addition to the fact that the two people she loves the most appear to be on an irreversible crash course to kill each other makes it even worse

Naruto: A childhood of neglect along with emotional and potentially physical abuse caused him to bury the pain behind a facade of idiocy until he essentially became the mask; though pain of this magnitude can not stay buried forever. Eventually he overcame this pain and became a hero to his village

Sasuke: once just an innocent child, perhaps a bit spoiled and bratty but otherwise a good kid. He loved his family more than anything, their deaths at Itachi's hands drove him to become an avenger, and the revelation of what really happened drove him insane as it probably would anyone else.

I personally can't bring myself to hate Sasuke because he's in many ways the biggest victim out of any single person in the series.

As I said in the comment he loved his family and his brother very much only to find out one night that the latter slaughtered the former before being given him a graphic visual re-enactment by Itachi; traumatic would be putting it mildly for anyone, but keep in mind he was only seven or eight when this happened. In the eight to nine years that followed he hunted his brother down to take revenge and eventually succeeded, which is also very traumatic since even under completely justifiable circumstances that still made Sasuke a fratricide (to my knowledge this was also the first time he actually killed someone which is also a very traumatic experience in of itself). Then came Tobi's revelation which was the death nail to his sanity.

If I was part of the Naruto series, knowing what I know I would kill Sasuke without mercy or hesitation if given the means and the opportunity. But I wouldn't be able to hate him because I also know that under the same circumstances, I would have gone off the deep end a lot sooner than he did. Ultimately it's not Sasuke who's to blame but the Uchiha clan for refusing to back down on their planned coup, Konaha for allowing their mistrust and fear to drive the Uchiha clan to such a level of desperation, and most of all Tobi who set the sequence of events in motion. I do not know just who or what he is; but I do know that all the dominoes that lead to all of Naruto and Sasuke's pain trace back to him

hmmmm... i understand where you're coming from. i do certainly feel for sasuke. as you said, what he was forced to experience as a result of the horrifyingly petty stubborness and selfishness of the uchiha clan and konoha (not to mention tobi) would have driven even the best of us insane. however, try as i might, i can never forgive him for what he did to naruto. naruto experienced so much pain as a child - you put it very well in your earlier comment. narutards all over the world could argue for years about whether sasuke or naruto had it worse, but ultimately, i dont think it matters. what matters to me is that sasuke attempted to kill naruto before he went to orochimaru so that he would be able to obtain the mangekyou sharingan - he decided that he would kill his best friend in order to become powerful, and because of this decision i dont think i will ever be able to not hate him. naruto is arguably the most virtuous character in the series, and one who has experienced more than his fair share of pain and suffering. all i want to see is naruto kick major tobi-ass and become the hokage someday - but sasuke stands in the way of naruto's dream, constantly causing naruto to suffer from extreme guilt over something that he had no control over.

i suppose it's because i compare him to naruto that i dislike sasuke so much... either way, i just cant bring myself to like sasuke when i love naruto so much. i can, however, sympathize with him - after all, with naruto, the biggest sasuke fan there is, as the main character, i dont think its possible for any naruto shippuden fan to completely despise sasuke, no matter what horrible things he does.

Ultimately it comes down to a very vexing philosophical question. Is it worse to have never known the love of a family or to have known such love only for it to be cruelly and violently taken away from you? If this series is any indication I think Kishimoto would answer the latter. Naruto himself has noted that given all the pain they've experienced they just as easily could have been in each others' positions. That's probably Kishi's greatest strength in this series is writing antagonists, particularly Pein and Sasuke.

The only other thing I would add to your comment is after their fight in the valley of the end Sasuke could have killed Naruto but chose not to. How much of this was out of compassion and how much was to spite Itachi is debatable but at this point at least he hadn't completely fallen off the deep end yet.
