The Dragon Unicorn - Chapter 01Dawn was breaking over the Unicorn Forest. The birds announced to every being reached by their gentle singing that it was time to start another day. Gallan woke up to the warm rays of the sun shining through the foliage of the trees. He found it hard to leave the soft moss he slept on, but he spread his wings, stretched, and stood up. Sending a warm smile to greet the waking friend, he said. - Another day, Slin. Maybe this is the one where something will finally change. - What would change? - Siffa said, rubbing her sleepy eyes with her paw. - Ah, I don't know. Maybe instead of going to the Glade, I would fly to it, and for breakfast we would eat berries from a bush that grew thanks to the power of my horn. Although who knows what power lies within it. - the unicorn joked. - Oh, that's what you're talking about. Right, excuse me. - Slin replied abashed, but then she made a joke herself. - Until then, I'll do the flying and finding the fruit bushes, okay? I'm pretty good at it. - I can't disagree. Let's go then, my belly is starting to growl strangely at me. After breakfast, as every day, walking towards the Unicorn Glade through the monumental forest corridor, the friends chatted with each other. - You know what, Slin, maybe I will… - ... I will soar in the sky and use magic better than many unicorns. - Siffa finished for him. - Do you still remember it? What I meant was that I might still be good at pulling weeds out of the Glade. The horn should do. - Oh, don't say that. And of course I remember. You used to say that every day. And then you stopped. - Those words gave me hope during all those fruitless lessons with almost every teacher in the Glade. And then, well... I had exhausted all ideas of how I could master my skills, and those words went away alongside hope. - Gall sighed quietly. - You? Run out of ideas? I don’t believe it. - Slin teased him. - Shocking, I know. - Although I must admit that recently you... have dimmed. You don't engage in as many tasks in the Glade anymore, abandon the ones you’ve started, walk around lost in thoughts, and get angry much more easily. Maybe you want to finally talk about it? - How am I supposed to not be angry!? I would like to do something useful for the Glade and our herd, but instead more and more of the things I do end up in some kind of disaster. I can't even be a normal unicorn! I just feel… tired. - And do you remember WHO last summer warned us about the approaching fire, thanks to which we managed to control it in time? WHO always manages to calm down the little unicorns when they get angry or scared? Or WHO proposed to grow lavender around our fruit bushes and thus outsmart these stubborn deers into changing the trail. Since then, the bushes have not been eaten or destroyed. The deers didn't even notice, and they were sneezing for a whole month! - And you probably also remember WHO caused the landslide around the waterhole, almost burying the drinking unicorns. Or more than a few other accidents I've caused. - Hmm. - Slin paused for a moment. - You’ve never been the most confident unicorn, but you’ve been making up for it with your determination. I can see that this uncertainty of yourself has deepened in you as well. Everyone makes mistakes, believe me, I know that, but remember that it doesn't define you. Slin flew up to the unicorn's nose and hugged him, bringing back a soft smile on his face. It always lifted his spirits. The friends reached the end of the forest’s shaded tunnel and emerged into a Glade bathed in warm sunshine. In an instant, a group of winged unicorns caught up with Gal and knocked him to the ground. - Gal, Gal! - shouted one of the little ones - When will you take us for another flying lesson? - Hi, little ones. I don't know yet, you have to be patient. But now it’s time for a horn magic lesson. Isn't it? - Gal replied, trying to get out of the hugs. - Yes, but we want to spend time with you. You're cooler than Nally. - Oh, really? And speaking of which, here she goes. She's probably looking for you all. - Gal said, pointing his head in the direction from which an older unicorn was coming. - So you've run off to Gallan again. I should have expected that, you little troublemakers. - said Nally clearly amused, while trying to sound serious - Get off of him and follow me, please, it's time for a lesson. The disconsolate little ones came down from Gal but as soon as he could move again, he spread his feathered wings as wide as he could and wrapped them all in a goodbye hug. Shouting goodbyes, the little ones headed towards one of the corridors leading into the forest. Nally turned to Gal before following them. - I know you like teaching them, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. - The fact that I know flying only from theory doesn't mean that I can't help them at least a little bit. - Gal replied, feeling the anger ignite in him. - Perhaps. But you can't guarantee what you teach them will actually help either. Learning how to fly for a unicorn with wings is as important as learning how to control the magic of the horn. You can't take this lightly. - Nally admonished him. - Nally, please… - Slin began to speak, seeing Gallan's growing anger, but he cut her off. - We both know it perfectly well. I don't see the need for you to keep reminding me of that. - Yes, I must. - Nally looked with care at the retreating unicorns. - I won't let them end up like… She stopped suddenly, realizing she was speaking out loud. - As me. - Gallan finished for her. Nally's gaze moved to the unicorn angrily staring at her. - Well, your problems are no secret, but thank the Tree of Birth that you are not a Dragon Unicorn. One of us going insane is the last thing we need here. - That's what we agree on, Nally. I would never forgive myself for bringing any kind of danger to our home. - Gal replied looking around. Spring has settled in the Unicorn Glade for good. Flowers and trees bloomed, filling the air with sweet scents, and the inhabitants enjoyed the warm rays of the sun. The Glade was Gallan's home, and he could always find solace in it. Nally, as if reading his thoughts, said. - I've known you since birth, Gallan. You are part of the herd and will always find support here, but leave the teaching to others. Besides, don’t you think gliding from the top of a waterfall is too extreme, especially for little ones? The young unicorn's newly found calm, turned into frustration again. He knew that Nally was partly right, but he didn't admit it, and in the end he said nothing. The elder unicorn smiled and walked away. Gal waited a moment and releasing the accumulated emotions, threw his wings into the air, fluttering them strongly. - Oh, that Nally! - he shouted - The fact that I fell several times into the river does not mean that the little ones must too. They were doing great! Then he heard Slin’s worried voice behind him. - Gal? What is this? The unicorn quickly turned and found her looking at some feathers on the ground. Surprised, he lifted one of the wings and looking under it, he discovered that in the place where the feathers had been growing just a moment ago, now he could see... - Am I seeing right? Is that a membrane? - Slin, don't be silly. That would mean that I am... - he stopped mid-word - You don't want to tell me that I am... - mumbled the unicorn opening his eyes wider and wider. - A Dragon Unicorn? - No, that's ridiculous. - Gal replied seeming to reject the idea completely. - And to prove to you that there is nothing to worry about, we'll ask Nefrail about it. Slin looked worriedly at the unicorn, but after a moment she sat on his back ready to go. Gal moved towards the Tree of Birth much faster than he had planned. Siffa felt that he was trembling slightly.,
